It was quite apparent that the life-bringing temperatures of New-Leaf had been swept away and replaced by the overbearing and ever-present sun of Green-leaf. Warm rays stretched bright arms down to the earth below, heating the ground and pelts of furry creatures alike, which wasn’t so joyous when you were a thick-furred feline such as Nettlenose. The medicine cat had ventured out two days ago to find herbs to aide in the pending and now finished battles that the clans had just endured, but she hadn’t returned that day…

A search wasn’t really capable when a battle was going on, and though a medicine cat was needed more than ever during this time, she hadn’t been around. It was unclear why, as she had told Startledcrow before she left the camp that she was only going out for Coltsfoot among other things that she hoped to find, but that wouldn’t have taken two days to come by. The molly was always back by the time the moon had set high within the sky.

Finally, around noon of the third day, when the sun was at its mightiest potential, Nettlenose’s fluffy and stocky short body wriggled into camp, her round emerald eyes tinged with sleepiness and her pelt a bit ruffled with burrs, but other than that she seemed alright, if not hungry. However, her sudden appearance and her lack of grooming were not the strangest thing about the molly. Within the creamy feline’s jaws hung that of a kit, looking just around perhaps two moons, old enough to where it didn’t necessarily need its mother to feed it but young enough to where it shouldn’t be alone.

The kits dangling body was a stark white, two black spots of different sizes placed along its flank and lower back. Its tail was this same black, though somewhat striped, and the left side of its face and ear had similar coloring. The kit’s blue eyes were squinted, as if it had been carried for awhile now and was sick of the ride. Nettlenose wasted no time as she trotted past clanmates quickly to the medicine den, her head poking in as she blinked through the dimness for the familiar sight of Startledcrow.

Startledcrow? The molly asked after setting the kit down, her head turning to spot him. The den smelled of old blood, new blood as well, aftermath from the fought battle she assumed. She had work to do, but first this situation needed handling. She needed to discuss things with Wolfstar as well, but first, her fellow medicine cat before she fetched her father…

    Startledcrow ~ WindClan Medicine Cat

Paws were dragging against the ground as the exhausted medicine cat was constantly on his feet, so many had been injured from the previous battle and he had barely gotten a moments rest to really sink into a useful sleep. Nettlenose had gone missing and Startledcrow as her apprentice and he had to step up to the plate. Falconpaw was no longer critical, his situation was finally stabilizing but he still had to keep a very close eye on the wounds, making sure that they were staying clear of any serious infections. Startledcrow’s pelt was dull and slightly ruffled, clearly he needed a well groomed and perhaps a soak in the lake water, but that could wait until he was sure that Falconpaw would be alright purely on his own. He was taking precautions in case Nettlenose didn’t return. A soft sigh slipped from his dark nostrils as his left paw was tenderly moving the cobwebs out of the way in order for Startledcrow to peer down at the paste that covered one of Falconpaw’s gruesome wounds, making sure the paste wasn’t dried out. “Hang in there, Falconpaw.” He sighed.

His ear twitched as he heard a familiar voice, causing his head to turn as his name was spoken. Tired blue eyes landed upon the pelt of his mentor, eyebrows pulling together in part confusion and partially relief. Nettlenose was here! She was alright! Now where the hell had she been? “Nettlenose?” He questioned, he sounded relieved but he was very tired, his blue eyes watching the she-cat as his eyes roamed over her pelt for any signs of injuries. “Where have you…” He trailed off as his good eye caught sight of a white and black bundle sitting barely just behind Nettlenose, causing his pupil to narrow. “Why do you have a kit here?” He questioned, but even bothering to go check up on the kit. Looking back at Nettlenose, his expression hardening with annoyance. “You disappeared… and brought back a kit of all things?” He growled slightly, shaking his head as he turned away from her and moved back to Falconpaw, he had more important things to do than handle his mentor and some kit she brought back.

Nettlenose shifted her paws a bit restlessly, her joints achey as she shuffled over to her herb supply, momentarily ducking beside Falconpaw with sorrowful eyes. The young one had suffered greatly in the battle it seemed, and a pang of guilt rushed her chest for not being home sooner. But it wasn’t as if she felt she had any choice. As she began to nose through the stash they had, the fur along her back began to prickle at the sound of Startledcrow’s tone, which wasn’t exactly the cheerful welcome she’d been hoping to receive from her apprentice, but she wasn’t sure what she was expecting anyways from the grumpy tom.

A very hungry kit with a terrible need for grooming. Good to see you too Startledcrow, yes I’m fine thank you. Where was I for two nights, did I run into any trouble? Oh how nice of you to ask! Go and find the kit something small off the pile and I’ll fill you in when you’ve returned.” The medicine cat replied in a cheerfully sarcastic tone, her tail still facing the dark colored tom as it flicked with annoyance. Something must have happened while she was gone to bother her, for she wasn’t usually so easily agitated. She wasn’t sure what he assumed of her return and absence, but she didn’t appreciate it. Startledcrow never seemed to have any faith in her despite her efforts to keep secrets for him and ensure his happiness.

I’m going to go and fetch Wolfstar, I need to speak with him about my absence. Well done looking after things while I was away, Falconpaw looks like he’s still breathing because of your help.” The molly noted, padding over to the kit on the floor, who had done nothing other than hiss at Startledcrow when he passed. She mumbled for it to stay where it was and then left the den, going straight to Wolfstar’s in hopes of finding him there.

    Wolfstar…?

Make sure each patrol has warriors that weren’t too badly injured in the battle. They need to rest, and I want us prepared for any other attacks.” Wolfstar flicked his tail at Desertrose, indicating he was now done speaking. He watched her leave with a dip of her head, and Wolfstar turned back towards the nest where Goldenrose lay sleeping. She had been one of the few warrior’s that was injured to the point of exhaustion, and Startledcrow, as well as he, commanded her to rest in their den until she was well enough. The stubborn mate of his didn’t like the idea of not helping the Clan, but he wouldn’t hear any of it. Goldenrose was too precious to him, and he didn’t want to have to watch her faint again. The WindClan leader made his way towards her, his paw pads pressing against the dirt floor softly, so as not to wake her. His blue eyes were set on Goldenrose’s coat. The golden flecks mimicked falling rose petals on white snow with each rise and fall of her chest. She was asleep, and he prayed to StarClan she was dreaming good dreams. He placed a paw in their nest to settle beside her, but the sound of another set of pawsteps made him pause. He himself was still recovering from losing a life, and he wanted sleep and rest more than anything, but it was difficult to do so as Clan leader.

What is it?” he murmured, keeping his voice low. However, the scent of his daughter, Nettlenose, drifted his way and his eyes widened. “Nettlenose? You’re back,” he purred, padding towards the medicine cat with relief. She looked a little bedraggled. Her fur was dirty and her eyes were droopy with exhaustion. “What happened? Are you hurt? Where were you?” He had so many questions for her, but he stopped talking to give her time to answer each one.

Nettlenose gave a friendly and courteous nod to Desertrose as she passed, watching the deputy slip out of the den before she took a few steps further in. Her eyes met the sharp, blue eyes of her father, and instantly she felt more secure, as if she were still a kit who took comfort in the presence of a parent. That feeling never faded she supposed, and she felt lucky for it. Having someone in her life who made her feel safe was securing.

Wolfstar…” The molly repeated, this time with relief as she met the tom with a smile. He seemed glad to see her, more so than Startledcrow had at least, and it warmed her fur as he drew a list of worried questions. How would he react to the story she had to share though concerning her absence? “No, I’m not injured…but I do need to speak with you about where I’ve been. I’d like Startledcrow present as well so I can tell you at the same time, would you mind coming to my den for a moment?” She requested, searching his familiar face. The medicine cat was trying to keep her voice soft, which wasn’t difficult for her, so she wouldn’t awaken Goldenrose. It seemed better they speak in her den anyways so she wouldn’t disturb the leader’s mate as she slept.

After his confirmation, the creamy colored she-cat turned and padded out of the den, heading back to her own where Startledcrow awaited with the kit and Falconpaw. The kit hadn’t wanted anything to do with the strange black tom and had given a nice hiss if he walked by, its head turned and ears flattened. It did not seemed pleased in the slightest, but the look in its eyes spoke of hunger and a need for a bath.

Wolfstar stared at Nettlenose as she spoke, her voice soft and her eyes still kind. For her to seem so casual made him realize that she had left on purpose, and wasn’t taken or lost. Did she leave just for a casual stroll that turned out to be longer just to get away? Did she not know that they had just had a war with the other Clans? Suddenly, he wasn’t as worried over where she had been anymore, annoyance quickly taking over that emotion. “Wh-” he started to say, but she had turned around and left his den, leaving him confused. The leader turned to look at Goldenrose, itching to wake her and tell her what was going on, but he knew she would snap at him harsher than an angry badger if he disturbed her deep snooze. He let out a large sigh before quietly slipping out of the rabbit burrow so he wouldn’t disturb her.

Wolfstar weaved his way through a group of conversing warrior’s, and they watched him and the medicine cat with wide eyes as he followed Nettlenose to the medicine den, his tail lashing and head lowered. Once they went inside, he swiveled his head around to get a good look at what was going on. Wildpaw was taking a nap in the back corner of the medicine den, his pelt ruffled from helping Startledcrow as much as he could to look after the injured cats. Startledcrow was hovering over Falconpaw, his ears twitching when he and Nettlenose padded in. Wolfstar frowned and turned away from his daughter, stepping up to Falconpaw’s nest. “Will he be okay?” he asked Startledcrow, his heart aching for the young apprentice that had so much more life to live. Suddenly, a strange scent wafted towards him and Wolfstar turned quickly towards a young kit that was staring up at him with big eyes, its mouth opening in a soft ‘mew’. Wolfstar stared at it for awhile, not moving. What in StarClan’s name…. Wolfstar slowly turned to Nettlenose with narrowed eyes, his voice low, even, and firm. “You left your Clan in the middle of war to bring back a kit? Did you know that WindClan and ThunderClan had to fight off the other Clan’s and Startledcrow was left here alone to look after the injured? Wildpaw had to help!” As he said his son’s name, Wildpaw’s ears twitched as he was woken up, and he lifted his head to look at the three adults tiredly.
