    Silverferret ~ SkyClan Queen

One shift. Two shift. Three shift. Tonight this young queen couldn’t seem to get comfortable in her nest, she hadn’t even been within this new clan of hers a week and she felt like she was gonna pop. For the most part everyone had been welcoming, understanding of their reasoning for leaving, but some SkyClanners were disgusted by the two ThunderClanners and weren’t afraid to hide it. Silverferret was still feeling awkward, unsure of how to react among all the strangers and her heart still stung from leaving Plumdust behind, but his heart belonged to ThunderClan. Foxnose on the other hand was having the time of his life, being surrounded by family and tailing Firestar like a love sick puppy. Really it was annoying but she kept her mouth shut, he never had a family and she wouldn’t be the reason that he couldn’t get to know his older half brother better. Honeysplash had avoided both Foxnose and herself since their arrival three days ago, and she couldn’t blame him. He wasn’t ready to accept Foxnose and wanted to take things at a slower pace while Foxnose wanted to rush into things and couldn’t understand what he was doing wrong. Poor Foxnose, for a cat his age he was still so dense and naive.

Whiskers twitched as her lips pulled back in a grimace, pain tweaked her side slightly as she moved to lay on her right side, pupils narrowing slightly as she peered around the medicine cat den. Everything had been explained to Saffrongaze about Silverferret having a high risk pregnancy and honestly the strange and nervous medicine cat only made her that much more nervous. Calm, Silverferret. Everything will be okay. She silently told herself, paper-thin ears lowering back against her head for a brief moment before she licked at her dry lips. Her moss nest was blush and soft but for whatever reason she just couldn’t get comfortable. Hues of pinks and oranges were beginning to filter in through the den, indicating another sleepless night for the Queen. Lips parted as a hefty sigh filtered it’s way out, shifting her round body once more until she felt a slight release along the bottom of her stomach and the sound of something dripping caught her attention. Oh, great Starclan. Silverferret knew very well that her water had broken, a different kind of anxiety clawing at her heart as the silver and white tabby turned her chin to spot Saffrongaze and Speckledpaw in their nests. “Saffrongaze…. Saffrongaze!” She spoke softly at first but the cream Scottie hadn’t budged, her tone sharpening as she snapped out the medicine cats name. Saffrongaze appeared to awaken at her harsh tone, her expression softening besides the slight unease in her periwinkle blue eyes. “Saffrongaze, my water has broken.” She informed the medicine cat, the tip of her tail twitching anxiously.

Foxnose couldn’t be more happy with their decision to move to Skyclan, he felt much more at ease raising his family around such a strong clan who will definitely protect their little heads. He didn’t mind the disgusted scowls thrown his way by some of the other Skyclanners, whether they liked it or not he had Skyclan blood boiling in his veins, he, and by extension, his family had every right to be there now. The large ginger tom felt much safer within their walls than he ever did in Thunderclan, he did feel terrible about leaving his first and only apprentice behind but they were a warrior now, they could make their own decisions. He knew his lovely mate was struggling more than him to settle down in their new life, but he didn’t expect her to feel happy about it right away. She left everything behind not only for him, but for the future of their little ones. All Silverferret needed to do was trust in him and everything would be just fine….he hoped anyways.

Silverferret is going to love this! The large tom hummed softly as he carried a large plump squirrel, which he hoped would lift her spirits even just a little. His large frame dipping into the medicine cats den, knowing his restless bird would still be awake due to her inability to find comfort recently. “Mornin-” His greeting was returned with a sudden announcement of her water breaking. The squirrel fell to the ground with a thud, panic taking over his paws as he ran around the den, “Ww-hat do we do? Are you sure?” Dumb questions fumbling from his muzzle as he shuffled in a panic around the silver molly. Weakness shivering up his paws as the strength was pushed from them, his legs sprawled out underneath him as he fell to the ground, “We-we-we have to get Peachbloss-” His words slurring out as his eyes closed. Foxnose was excited to be a dad, but perhaps the excitement was a bit too much for the sensitive tom.

What a long day… Post gathering. While the patients of her den decreased, as they were healed, another took a nest; a pregnant Queen ready to pop at any moment. The situation was explained and Saffrongaze had only done birth on a few occasions. This Queen had special circumstances and she stayed calm for the most part, despite her being from Thunderclan. She wondered how Firestar was taking to Foxnose moving to Skyclan… How did Thunderclan feel about this?

She shook her head and decided to call it a night after ensuring her patients were well. Saffron noticed the Queen tossing and turning and offered her a fresh leaf with some cold water. She gave a tender shoulder pat with her tail before heading to her nest to retire for the night.

A few hours pass and Saffrongaze began getting sleep visions. Flashes of kittens and a stork, new birth. Her fur twitched slightly and then she opened her eyes, gasping softly and shaking her head. She heard a voice, the Queen’s. “Silverferret, are you- oh Starclan.” She murmured, getting to her paws and scrambled a tad to grab a basket, tenderly but gathering the herbs needed for birth. Her folded ears pricked slightly, hearing another voice. “Who’s what– Foxnose??” She mumbled, peeking from behind her fern curtains. “Foxnose! Calm yourself, you’ll only stress Silverferret out. I understand your excitement but I need your head screwed on properly.” She called out, trotting over to the two and a gentle nose touches the Queen’s belly. “Ah yes… they are ready. Now, I need you to be calm more than ever, Silverferret, okay? I understand this may be scary but you can trust me. Alright?” She said as tenderly as she could. Saffrongaze understood the nervousness of a new time parent; she’d help plenty in the past. She placed down the basket looped around her tail and placed down a small amount of dandelion leafs, raspberry leafs but kept a poppy seed within the basket. “That’s for later after the kits are born. Eat these herbs. Birthing is a natural thing so your body will let you know when it’s time to push but you only push when the time comes. Foxnose, when the first kit is born, I’ll need you to grab it, very gently, chew it free from its sack than place it at Silverferret’s stomach so it can nurse.” She said, trotting to refill her leaf for some freshwater.

Speckledpaw didn’t know what to expect from this calm evening. Though it definitely wasn’t trotting into the Medicine Cat den, after parking in her last meal for the night, to find her mentor Saffrongaze, an excited father to be, and a heavily pregnant she-warrior about to be queen all gathered in the den.

There was no doubt in Speckledpaw’s mind, this she-cat was about to give birth, and soon new little kits would be brought into the life of a warrior. It was a most joyous and momentous of occasions. New births to the clan were always celebrated.

The dappled medicine cat apprentice quickly took to her mentor’s side, this would be the first time Speckledpaw would be experiencing a kitting for herself, “Is there anything I may do, Saffrongaze?” She questioned, knowing that the sooner she learned about the process of kitting, the better.

She’d have to learn all this and more if she was to be a full fledged Medicine Cat one day.

    Silverferret ~ SkyClan Queen

She shifted uncomfortably as her tongue ran along her teeth, suddenly her mouth felt rather dry. Chin tilting slightly as she looked towards Saffrongaze as she began to stand up, nodding her head urgently in response to the question that was mumbled her way. Although she wasn’t so sure about Saffrongaze, the molly appeared to be ready for this pregnancy, clearly as she immediately went forwards her basket like contraption that held precious herbs to aid in the during and after of her kitting. “What abo-“ She was immediately cut off when she heard large paws hitting the ground of the den, chin turning as her periwinkle colored gaze landed upon Foxnose. Think of him and he shall appear. Silverferret sighed in relief but the sound of her mate immediately dropped his squirrel and his golden eyes widened in panic. Do males usually act this way? She wondered in a panic as she watched Foxnose rush around the den, before he began to anxiously circle her. “Saffrongaze is getting.. what are you doing? Of course I’m sure.” Silverferret snapped as she glared at Foxnose before a ripple of pain made its way down her side. “Owww.” She complained, although she didn’t exactly have the urge to push, she was already shifting once more in her nest.

As Foxnose fell to the ground only mere foot lengths away from her, eyes widened in complete surprise as Foxnose fainted in front of her. She knew her mate was a sensitive and excitable soul but she never imagined he would faint! “F-Foxnose?” She stuttered out, completely shocked before Saffrongaze pulled her attention away from Foxnose in order to keep her stress levels low. So far it wasn’t working. “B-but is he okay?” She questioned, before her face twisted in pain. Ears flattened against her head when Saffrongaze gently touched her nose to her swollen belly, sensing the contractions. “Okay, I trust you.” Silverferret nodded, chin tilting slightly for a moment while Saffrongaze began to explain what exactly she had within the basket. Nodding wordlessly, as her wyes nervously flickered towards Foxnose before she looked back towards Saffrongaze. Pupils narrowing slightly as another spasm of pain overtook her senses, a small moan of pain slipping from her lips. Silverferret could no longer focus on her excited mate as her mind was clouding with pain with the slowly growing need to push. “I… I feel like I need to push.” She huffed, eyebrows furrowed as she looked up at the medicine cats.

Get up ya big dummy, your mate is about to give birth. His eyes slowly blinked open to the sight of the three felines, hearing Saffrongaze give him orders Foxnose popped right up, “Yes ma’am” Nodding at the medicine cat. Foxnose swiftly moved behind his mate, thinking it was the best way to stay out of their space until he was needed. His tongue gently rasping over the silvery pelt mollys forehead, “Its okay Darlin, you got this.” He muttered to her. The large ginger tom was beyond nervous but now he needs to keep his cool, Silverferret and his kits needed him now. He was ready, ready to meet his kits, ready to be a father, ready for Silverferret to be out of danger. His nose gingerly touching her belly, “I can’t wait to meet you, my worlds.” His voice was nothing more than a mere whisper.

He had spent so many hours dreaming about this moment, it was finally here and he could hardly contain himself, but first they had to get through this. Silverferret warned Foxnose early on that she would have a difficult birthing, he was excited to finally have their kittens but this was the part he was dreading. He was silently hoping the medicine cats knew what they were doing. In just a few hours Skyclans newest additions would have even more newest additions.

Saffrongaze gave Foxnose a slight ehh look as he just popped back into shape. He was certainly strange fellow but he meant well. The face shifted to a calming happy when he talked to his kits, who were within Silverferret’s belly. She padded back over with the Queen’s freshwater and pressed a nose against the side of her spine. Hmm… yes, it was time. “Your body will know. Listen to it. Push if you need to but only for a few seconds, then start again.” She instructed. Saffron noticed Speckledpaw sitting back and while she understood this was a frantic situation, she needed to address her apprentice. “Speckledpaw, fetch me some mossballs. I understand this is nerve-wracking but I need you focused. You will have to do this someday when my time comes.” She said, giving Silver’s back a few comforting strokes.

    Silverferret ~ SkyClan Queen

A shiver rushed down the slender queens spine as her stomach continued to constrict, pupils narrowing slightly for a moment in pain. Everyone left her focus as her only focus became her stomach and her unborn kittens, pink nostrils flaring with each breath as she was told to relax. This was always so stressful for her body but she gave Saffrongaze a short nod as she barely registered what the molly had said. Ignoring her mate completely, Silverferret knew that she had to focus, turning her chin away from Foxnose as another soft moan of pain left her throat. Slowly the feeling to push was becoming more and more urgent; but she did listen to the medicine cat when she was told to wait until the feeling was overwhelming. Minutes passed before she felt the pain blossom along her lower region, ears pressing back against her small head as her body shifted into a slightly more comfortable position to give birth. Small huffs of breath were beginning to be released from her nostrils as the pain grew, opening her eyes to look at Saffrongaze as she managed a small nod. “O-okay. I need to p-push.” She stammered, alerting the medicine cat and her mate that the feeling the push was becoming overwhelming.

Finally her stomach constricted powerfully, sending waves of pain throughout her lower region as Silverferret began to push. “Aaaa…” She groaned out in a low tone, muzzle pressed into her paws as she continued to push with each contraction. With little effort, the first kitten was soon born, softly falling onto the nest. Foxnose was quick to release his first born from the sac, cleaning the soft black and orange fur of the female kitten to get her to squeak. But something wasn’t quite right with this little kitten, her breathing was off and shallow, small ears pinned back against her head and her movements were slow and weak when her father cleaned her fur. This kitten wouldn’t live very long after birth, but Silverferret was unaware of her daughters condition as she felt contractions continue as a second kitten wasn’t too far behind the first. With a groan and a powerful push, another kitten was born and released from the sac. Within was a small brown tabby Tom, his breathing strong and his limbs jerky with being cleaned of the birth matter. A healthy tomkit.

Speckledpaw nodded to her mentor, breaking the surface of her initial waves of shock, as she turned away and scampered off to find the mossballs as instructed. She could hear the sounds of Silverferret as she kitted.

Her ears perked up as she heard the frailest of mewls from a newly born kit, this prompted Speckledpaw to make even more haste. She gathered up as much mossballs as she possibly could and returned to the scene of the birthing, she passed on the mossballs to her mentor, taking note that two kits had already been brought into the world of clan life.

Curiously she wondered if all kittings were this swift, but she hadn’t any time to focus on her own thoughts, she had to maintain focus. “Alright, what else do you need me to do, Saffrongaze? She questioned her mentor, this time her voice more steady and laced with newfound confidence and readiness.

Saffrongaze watched as Speckled departed then returned with the mossballs. They would serve as clean up or comfort. She watched as Silverferret took action and did as she said. She went down to the kittens, sniffing the first one. This one worried her a lot… Her neck fur raised slightly with fear; this one could not make it through the night. It was due to genetics, nature… Starclan’s will. “Foxnose, I’m going to need you to give extra attention to that one. Speckledpaw, take over for releasing the kits from the sacs, and putting them to Silverferret’s stomach.” She said, keeping watch. She didn’t like where this was going; she knew she had reason to worry about the Queen’s size and the mate’s size. She wasn’t sure if she could save the unfortunate kits that were weaker than the rest but by Starclan, she will try. She pondered, what could she do to help these kits live… or if she could even help at all.

    Silverferret ~ SkyClan Queen

This birth was certainly her longest, her first litter had only contained two kittens and her daughter hadn’t survived the birth. Still borns and weak births were common among feral felines, but it didn’t make it any easier on the females. Both physically and emotionally. Silverferret had come to terms that she wasn’t the best she-cat to give birth, how would Foxnose take it if any of their kittens didn’t survive? She knew some wouldn’t, but she had hope that there would be survivals. “Aaaaa…” She groaned deeply as a shudder of pain rippled along her stomach as Foxnose cared for the first kitten, the small black and orange patched she-kit’s breathing was shallow and her movements were barely there. However, the second kitten was strong and squeaking under the care of Speckledpaw before he was placed at her stomach, although he couldn’t exactly feed with her contractions but he could stay warm. Another small groan left her lips for a brief moment as her stomach started contracting once more before she had the overwhelming sensation to push.

Lowering her head into her small fore paws, eyes closed as she pushed, brows furrowed as eventually the third kitten was born. Within the sac was another tortoiseshell female, although she was much larger than her sister and brother. This kitten was squirming and finally squeaked once Speckledpaw released her from the sac, little head lifting and falling as her small body squirmed. A healthy female at last. Although Silverferret was unaware of her kittens conditions as she was getting ready to give birth to another kitten, although she was having a little difficulty with this kit. This forth kit was a large kitten and was giving her a hard time, shifting this way and that in order to try and give her a better push advantage. “Ohhhhh…” She cried out, ears pinned back against the crown of head tightly as it took minute after minute to try and give birth to this kit. Please… please let the kit survive. Silverferret silently prayed, a deep sigh of relief leaving her lips when she finally pushed the rest of the kitten out, becoming slack within the next.

Within the sac held a rather large black and white patched tomcat, although his movements were stilled and his chest unmoving. Unfortunately this little kitten was a result of his mother’s small birth canal, his body starved of oxygen for too long. Silverferret knew she wasn’t finished yet, but her stomach was slowly contracting, giving her enough time to turn her chin and gaze at her kittens so far. A small tortoiseshell that Speckledpaw and Foxnose were caring for carefully, a small brown tabby male, a large tortoiseshell female, and a large black and white male that the medicine cats were desperately trying to revive. A small glimpse was all she got before the pains of labor required her attention once more.

As Saffrongaze feared, the kits were too much for the queen. She began pushing out miscarriages due to the tiny she’s body. Her heart stung with sorrow, seeing those kits unable to get a chance at life but she knew they rested soundly in Starclan. As the two worked from kit to kit, Silverferret continued to birth and Saffrongaze had no other options then to assit her, despite the fate of the kits. Some were probably already were deemed deceased due to the limited space and air provided. Saffrongaze wished she could help clean the kits but she had to monitor the Queen’s birth and to check any signs of defects, despite the stillborns within her belly.
