Cupcake’s bright green gaze moved around nervously as she was herded into ‘SkyClan camp’… whatever that meant. She didn’t know for sure why they wouldn’t just let her leave since she was “intruding” or whatever, but thanks to the way the cats that brought her here were looking at her, she had a feeling. The four cats who forced her to come along, Foxpaw, Ashenpaw, Darkbird, and Rookfall, had her boxed in, so there was no escape. Her gaze fell to Foxpaw, and she regarded the young tom silently. He was the least intimidating of the bunch. ‘What was his name again? Box-something? Foxball? No, that’s stupid…’ She wracked her brain, trying to remember what the other cats had called him, but she just couldn’t. “Hey, little red cat, did you and your friends bring me here to kill me or something?” She asked, tail lashing. The black and white she-cat waited for an answer, suddenly realizing that there were actually many cats around her. On the ground, up in the trees… everywhere. She swallowed nervously, ears flattening to her skull as many pairs of eyes landed on her.

The cats that brought her kept mentioning a ‘Fire Star’, which sounded just plain terrifying. Was this ‘Fire Star’ some beast they wanted to sacrifice her to? Were they going to throw her into a fire? Whatever was about to happen to her, she felt like it wasn’t going to be good. Bad luck seemed to follow her everywhere nowadays. First she got hit by a car, then a few months later her owners throw her out, and now she was going to be killed by forest cats. Lovely. Rookfall broke away to retrieve the Fire Star, leaving Cupcake partially exposed. Her other escorts stayed firmly in their places around her. She stood there quietly, not noticing a small kit creeping towards her to get a closer look. Had she noticed the young one sooner, she would’ve made an attempt to hide her…abnormality, but by the time the kitten had caught her attention, it was too late. The little one looked absolutely horrified.

“Mama!” It screeched, turning tail to run back to its mother “That cat only has three legs!” Shocked and horrified by the kit’s exclamation, other cats started crowding to try to get a look for themselves. They wanted to know if the kit was telling the truth, and indeed it was. Cupcake was missing her back left leg. Embarrassment was coming off her in waves as the forest cats chattered around her, wanting to know what was wrong with her. Some even accused her of being diseased! She said nothing to defend herself and simply shrunk to the ground, hoping this was all just a bad dream.

    Rookfall

If he had known this day would turn out the way it did, he probably would have stayed in bed. He hated difficult situations, ironically. He felt less than capable to handle them. Yet, he couldn’t let his Clan down, as their deputy, and he was to be a role model for them. But a role model wasn’t a dictator, and each cat had their own opinion. He really didn’t care to bring her back to their camp, but Firestar had to know there were cats who dared to intrude on their territory. He knew the Clans didn’t respect them all too much, but they should at least start with securing their borders better.

“Keep her here,” was the last thing he growled to the patrol, his voice level and his expression blank. The tuxedo tom tried to keep himself as calm as possible, lest the situation escalate, and when he arrived he dared not let himself in. “Firestar,” he called loudly and clearly. “Our patrol has returned. An intruder. We thought perhaps you should speak with her.” She’s wild, he wanted to say, but he kept himself professional. He feared what would happen if she left, knowing the location of their camp.

Rookfall didn’t know what they should do. Hopefully, Firestar would.

    Firestar ~Skyclan Leader

The poor leader could already tell that his day was not going to go well. How could he tell might you ask? Well it just so happens that he was abruptly and rudely awakened by his deputy. Cursing profanities under his breath as he rises fully from the warmth of his nest. To him it was early morning, but to those outside it was mid afternoon, it would seem that someone had stayed up late into the night with his troubled thoughts. Not even bothering to check his appearance, not giving a damn about a few tufts of fur sticking up on his large form as he stalks out. Claws digging into the bark of the tree his nest resides in. Blinking several times to a custom to the brightness around him. Didn’t help that the snow reflects the sun’s rays.

Yes; he could tell that something had gone amiss. Whether that be from actually paying attention to Rookfall’s words, his tone, or the apprehension that seemed to cling into the air. His gaze already on the unknown feline curled to the ground in a pitiful manner. Pursing his lips as he climbs down skillfully, his large tufted paws hitting the ground in matter of seconds. Brushing past Rookfall, though he flicked his tail in a silent thanks for informing him. The air around Skyclan was so tangible that it caused his fur to bristle subconsciously. Stalking proudly and with meaning towards Cupcake, Darkbird, Foxpaw, and Ashenpaw. He barely throws them a glance as his concern was on the unknown she-cat.

Irritation was coursing through his veins, “What the name of Starclan is going on here?” His voice stern and cold. His words cutting the tension like a knife, causing many around him to shut their mouths. Smirking slightly as he was glad that the useless chatter had died away. Ember hues locking onto the shivering form of Cupcake. He couldn’t tell if she was shivering from the cold or fear; he suspected it was fear. Everyone remained silence, taking the silence as the time to observe the intruder. Eyes narrowing as he notices her shuffling form trying to hide something from him. “Stand up” he ordered, he hated seeing the black and white molly cower when it was her fault to why she was here in the first place. ‘What is with these felines thinking it’s okay to just wander through our territory?’ He wondered, his thoughts wandering back to Milky and Brightspark.

“Why were you found wandering about? Speak” his deep voice flatly resounded around him. His posture straight and stiff as he regards her. Wondering if she could continue to cower or finally speak up.

    Darkbird ~ SkyClan Warrior

To say his fur was a bit ruffled was a bit of an understatement, he found his pale golden eyes flickering back towards Cupcake as he found himself staring at the empty space of where a hind leg should have been. Its just not natural. He thought to himself, although silently he hated how unsettling it made him. Cupcake walked as though she barely noticed the leg was missing, her balance twice that of the best SkyClan Warrior he knew. And yet… it bothered him. She seems like a sweet enough feline, her voice and words were well chosen when she had approached them out of no where, but honestly it could have been Rookfall’s uneasy energy that was tugging at the back of his mind. Glancing towards the other tomcat, he could see the ruffled fur along his deputies shoulder blades. He doesn’t like this either. He realized, causing the fur along his spine to stand up with even more unease.

Large paws sank into the moist ground, causing him to throw a few curses into the wind before he found his balance and glanced towards Cupcake. “Excuse me.” He apologized, but quickly shook out his pelt. Small flecks of snow fell from his dark stone grey pelt, although white, pale grey and even black spots decorated his back, shoulders and the top of his head. Ashenpaw really hadn’t said much, marching along with the rest of the group while Foxpaw had been glancing nervously towards Cupcake as well. Feeling suddenly ashamed with the way his energy had been affecting the youth within the patrol, he sped up and barely caught the words that fell from Cupcakes mouth. Ear twitching for a moment before he cleared his throat and whispered. “We aren’t monsters. We don’t kill for fun.” He muttered, although he would allow Foxpaw to talk with her, even if she was missing a leg.

As they walked into the camp, he could tell that every cat was staring towards them, their eyes mostly trained upon Cupcake. And why wouldn’t they? He wondered silently for a moment, before he cleared his throat and allowed his gaze to harden as he gave a few staring glances a stern glare. Despite the fact that he felt their unease all the same, he was trying to keep the calm while his eyes flickered towards Rookfall as he hurried off to speak with Firestar. His gaze watching the other tomcat for a moment longer than was probably necessary, ears burning with the realization he had been staring. Blinking, he looked away from the leaders den as Rookfall disappeared within before he looked over his shoulder and gazed curiously towards Cupcake. “Try not to be too intimated.. Firestar… is a lot of cat to handle.” He admitted while keeping his voice low. Stepping to the side to where he was now standing beside of Cupcake as he kept others at bay, while his golden eyes flickered towards that of the leaders den as he could sense that the shadows had shifted.

Firestar walked out of the den with his head held high and his chest puffed out. Honestly there was no reason StarClan shoulder have made a cat that big, his body tall and long with rippling muscle everywhere. Honestly he was a dreamy Tom. But his eyes briefly looked past his broad shoulder to gaze at Rookfall as he followed Firestar out of the den. Swallowing the lump within his throat, he stayed silent when Firestar strolled up and began to hammer Cupcake with questions. Poor Molly… He thought silently, side glancing towards Cupcake as he felt pity prickle at his heart. Slowly a soft sigh left his lips before he looked ahead of him, looking at Rookfall silently before he looked away and simply listened silently to Firestar and Cupcake.

    FOXPAW.

He had volunteered for patrol believing it would be a regular, uneventful one, simply needing to get out of camp. As soon as they had come across the stranger’s scent though, he knew his day was about to be shaken up. They had managed to track the kittypet down, ignoring her pleas to be left alone as they herded her to camp. Personally he thought it pointless – they should have chased her off to die somewhere else. After all, how long could she possibly last with three legs, and why would they invite such a burden into their camp where she could possibly be invited to join their Clan? Firestar wasn’t soft, but Foxpaw couldn’t see the leader turning away this she-cat.

The orange tom kept his mouth shut on the trek back to camp though, keeping one eye on the kittypet as she hobbled along. He wasn’t going to help her if she fell or stumbled, but just because she only had three legs didn’t mean he was about to underestimate her either. Even if it was a whole patrol against a kittypet, he knew she could do damage going down swinging (if she was, in fact, not as hopeless as she seemed).

When they got to camp he stuck with the patrol, right by the kittypet, as Rookfall went to fetch Firestar. “We should just kill you, put you out of your misery,” he mumbled back to her, giving her the stink eye as his gaze lingered on her missing leg. How had she even survived this long, honestly? He fell silent as more cats pushed forward to speak to the kittypet, guard rising. Even though he had been with the Clan for moons now, he still found himself wary of others.

Cupcake really did not appreciate the way she was being treated right now. Her eyes narrowed as Foxpaw spoke about ‘putting her out of her misery’. The nerve! “You’re a charming lot, aren’t you?” She growled softly, tail lashing. “I was perfectly content until you-“ She was cut off by the appearance of Firestar. ‘Oh… it’s just a normal cat. If he’s as lovely as the rest of these ruffians, I would have preferred a beast. At least the dark one seems to have some manners.’ Aaaand this ‘Firestar’ was just as prickly as the others. Fantastic. Her eyes narrowed as she returned to her full height and the orange tomcat started interrogating her.

“Look-“ She began, tail flicking in irritation. “I’m lost, I’m cold, I’m tired, I don’t have a home anymore, I had to resort to eating a half frozen squirrel that looked like it had died days ago, and to top it all off I was forced to come here against my will!” She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, giving herself a moment to calm down. She sighed then opened her eyes once more, allowing her shoulders to relax. “My housefolk made me leave. It’s not like I was out there looking for trouble, I was just trying to find a place to stay so I wouldn’t freeze at night. Maybe you all think I should just die since I don’t look just like you, but I don’t care. I want to live.”

    Rookfall

Rookfall was thankful for how quickly Firestar came to see what the ruckus was about. By the time they returned, the entire Clan was peering or circling the three-legged loner named Cupcake. Tension rippled from her like waves, and her eyes were filled with a mixture of anger and fear. He couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for the she-cat, but she had trespassed. If they allowed any cat to cross their borders, fully abled or not, they would not be warriors, they would be a band of rogues. Still, warriors had standards. They had culture. As Rookfall journeyed at the side of his leader, he heard a spitting remark from one Foxpaw. The deputy halted to glare ice green daggers at the young tom.

“Warriors do not kill to win their battles, Foxpaw. We are a Clan, not an army.” He knew the tom was not Clan-born. He still had much to learn, but as long as Foxpaw lived within their borders, Rookfall would not let him get away with such scathing words. It was unworthy. He was not crass with him, merely strict. Whilst Firestar dealt with the new arrival, Rookfall turned to the Clan and tried to meet each of their gazes as he spoke quietly to them, moving among the crowd. “I know we are all nervous, but please try to gain some sense of honor, cats of SkyClan. If we start acting like savages now, what are we? Let us hear out the invader before we cast judgment.”

Rookfall halted beside a warrior he knew as Darkbird and offered a small, reassuring smile before listening to what Cupcake had to say. He was surprised by the strength in her tone and the resilience she exemplified in her tale, if it was true. Yet, if she was lying, he had no idea why that would be. She was in a camp full of dangerous, trained feral cats – she would be foolish to lie. The tuxedo tom stood tall and watched his leader, then the newcomer. A faint glimmer of respect glowed within him as she stood her ground.

    Firestar ~Skyclan Leader

His emotionless mask stayed in place as he watches Cupcake slightly struggling to her paws. His gaze locking on where her left hind leg should be, causing him to arch a brow in curiosity. The fiery tom had heard of felines being disabled by either being blind or deaf, but he had never seen one to be handicapped by missing a limb. Though he made no comment on the obvious, listening to the uncomfortable whispering around him caused him to shoot a menacing glare to all those willing to look him in the eye. Ears flicking as Rookfall’s deep baritone voice filtered around to fill in the silence. Smirking as his deputy easily controls the felines around them. Firestar knew why they were all on edge but in a way he thought of them foolish to believe she was much of a threat.

He was amused by her sassiness, glad that she wasn’t one to let others walk all over her. Though he easily hid his amusement by clicking his tongue in annoyance. To him; he had other things he could be doing than dealing with such a minor problem. Grunting at Foxpaw’s words, wishing to smack the young tom behind the head. Such words should be kept to himself. Eyes narrowing for a moment on Foxpaw before looking back at Cupcake, listening for a moment as she spills out her reasoning for how she got here. Sighing quietly as her voice was starting to cause a throbbing pain in his head; “I did not ask for your sob story” he cuts off sharply. His long fluffed tail flicking sharply before adding; “It is not my clans problem that your twolegs discarded you. Why should I allow you to stay within my clan? What can you bring to this clan that we don’t already have?” He snarked, his tone sharp and cold as he spoke.

Firestar knew that he should allow her stay, especially in her current state. Yet; he controlled his emotions, he wanted to know what she could do or provide for his clan. As of right now; all he saw was another mouth to fed during leaf-bare, one that probably couldn’t contribute to his clan. In the corner of his eye; he could sense many felines shuffle in unease at his blunt words. Firestar knew many would disagree with how he handles things, but they weren’t leader now were they? Silently he waits for Cupcake to answer his question, his ember eyes glowing in the light as he risks a small glance at his deputy; wondering what he thought about all of this.

    DarkBird ~ SkyClan Warrior

He was greatly surprised when Foxpaw looked at Cupcake with a serious expression as he quickly explained to the young Kittypet that he had no quarrel with bleeding her life dry and ending her misery. What misery? He thought silently, although he had been stunned into silence from the steel like expression that Foxpaw was currently wearing. DarkBird was known for having a softer heart than most of his clanmates but he hadn’t thought he was that soft. Clearing his throat he immediately saw how much Rookfall had been rubbing off on the young apprentice, but he supposed that was a good thing. Wouldn’t be so weak hearted. Swallowing his unease, he simply threw Foxpaw a stern like expression but he knew it wasn’t his place to reprimand Foxpaw for his lack of compassion.

Ears twitched when the lovely and deep sound of Rookfall’s voice suddenly cut through the tension of the air, calmly reminding Foxpaw that his choice of heart was dearly in the wrong place. Of course, Rookfall was right, they were a clan and not an army but he did admire the rough spunk that Foxpaw carried. It would help him further in life. He listened carefully to Rookfall when he spoke out towards the clan while Firestar simply stared curiously and harshly towards Cupcake, causing him to want to lower his ears but he forced himself to keep his composure before he looked towards Rookfall. The handsome tomcat did not allow his emotions to appear upon his face, but DarkBird knew that he had been unsettled by everything within their walk through the forest. Murmurs quieted as Rookfall seemed to hush some of their concerns, his words sprouting confidence back into the warriors as they eyed Firestar and Cupcake wearily.

However, when Rookfall stops beside of him, his throat bobbed with unease and he felt as if his breathing had hitched. Having Rookfall so close made him nervous, his scent glands being overwhelmed with the alluring scent of the tomcat before he cleared his throat and forced himself to look him in the eye as Rookfall offered a small and reassuring smile. Oh, sweet StarClan. He wailed internally, the sight was for sore eyes indeed, hardly had he seen Rookfall smile and it only improved his already good looking features. The sound of Cupcake speaking to Firestar brought him out of his daydreams, blinking in surprise as he gave Rookfall his own small smile, cheeks warm with embarrassment at being caught staring at point blank. Turning his chin away he looked between Cupcake and Firestar, his ears burning with the scorching words that echoed from both cats. Eyebrows furrowing as he looked back and forth, before he cleared his throat in order to gather Firestar’s attention.

“I.. I understand that any cat should be judged roughly for crossing our borders. But she has corroborated with us so far.” He spoke up in the defense of the kittypet, she may be a bit out of her depth with going head to head with Firestar but he admired her courage and spine in order to do so. “I believe that Cupcake here has great promise for the Clan, she has survived this long so far.” DarkBird concludes, holding the stare of Firestar even though his heart was hammering a mile a minute within his chest. Why couldn’t he just hold his tongue like the rest of his clanmates? Then you would be just as boring. He thought silently to himself, his shoulder fur bristling just enough to lightly graze the black furred shoulder of Rookfall.

He hadn’t expected anyone else to hear the comment, but as soon as the deputy’s icy green gaze landed on him, the apprentice’s metaphorical hackles were up. Truthfully he expected a firm cuff to his ears, even if he knew Clan cats didn’t resort to violence with their own Clanmates unless they had to, but the disapproving words somehow cut even deeper. Add Darkbird’s stern look on top of that, and he felt like he had been backed into a corner. How could they all be failing to see how at risk she was with her condition? It was a miracle she had survived so long on her own, and she would only be a liability if the Clan took her on. Dedication or not, a missing leg would always be a disability! He really thought it would be mercy if they killed her now, to spare her or themselves any unsavory situations down the road. Though he hadn’t been a loner but four moons when he was younger, the lessons he had learned still stuck with him. If he was in her spot, he would very much take the out!

Lashing his tail and flashing a barely contained snarl, he slunk back with his ears pinned to his head. Not even her Twolegs, known for being pampering and loving, had wanted her. Why should they? Seeing he clearly had no place in this conversation now, unless he wanted to risk more ire, he fully backed off and sat down with his back facing the group. It made his fur stand on end to not be able to see what could be coming at him, but he didn’t want to show all these older toms just how shaken they had all made him.

Cupcake would be lying if she said she didn’t appreciate Darkbird’s kind words and Rookfall’s calm demeanor. At least some cats here seemed levelheaded, she would find a way to repay Darkbird for his kindness later. She decided to simply ignore Foxpaw, since it seemed that he hadn’t been raised right. Some of these cats seemed really full of themselves, thinking that every single cat in the world understood their ways. Back when she lived with her housefolk, she could go wherever she wanted. House cats typically didn’t mind when another cat passed through their yard, as long as the visitor was friendly. She simply couldn’t fathom why these cats were any different… but it was clear that they were likely going to allow her to stay. As Firestar questioned her about her skills, her brow furrowed as she pondered her answer.

“I… I used to catch mice for my housefolk. I can really catch anything as long as it’s on the ground. Birds aren’t really my forte, since I can’t jump very high…” She paused, taking her first real look around the camp to gauge what they may need from her. “I can help mothers care for their kittens, I can collect materials you may need for construction around your camp. I’m willing and able to learn new skills if I must… within reason, of course. There are likely some things I just won’t be able to do, seeing as I am missing a leg.” She finished with a glance back to where her fourth leg should be, hoping her answer was satisfactory.

    Firestar ~Skyclan Leader

Turning his gaze away from the she-cat, his attention being drawn towards Darkbird. It was obvious that the warrior was the most unease one there, that he believed there was something about cupcake that would contribute to this clan. Firestar did not completely like how Darkbird spoke up, as if to challenge him. Frowning ever so slightly as he takes in the dark Tom’s words, basically begging that she should be given a chance. Humming in thought, his mind absorbing his words, their eyes remained connected as Firestar stares down the warrior. He would never admit it, but he was impressed that Darkbird had the gall to speak up and hold his ground.

Just when he opens his mouth to speak, Cupcakes voice rings through the air. Her tone starting off as timid but slowly builds with confidence as she continues. Shifting his form into a better position to eye her as well as Darkbird. ‘It would seem that she really wants to stay here’ he thought with a simple sigh escaping him. The dull ache in his head constantly throbbing as all he wanted to do was go to bed and enjoy some peace and quiet. Yet, that was never the case for the new leader.

At first; Firestar believed that she would only bring them down, that she would be a liability to not only herself but this clan. Now, he wasn’t so sure, as he listened to her explain what she could or could not due, it showed him that she had potential. Furrowing his brows as a thought crosses his mind, ‘Now who should teach and train her the ways of Starclan…?’ He mentally inquired. Suddenly a smirk pulls at his black rubbery hued lips, eyes glistening with mischief and amusement. “Hmm perhaps you can stay” he starts, his voice cool and collected, though it was clear that he was amused.

“Since Darkbird hear has vouched for you…he will be the one to train and teach you our ways.” Firestar adds with a cheeky grin as his stern gaze lands on the tall dark form of the warrior. “She will be your responsibility, anything happens it’s on you his voice remains calm and steady, but there was a tone of warning within his words. “Now; since it’s all settled, I believe it’s time to change your name” he sighs as he rises back to his paws. Moving closer to Cupcake as he observes her quietly, his mind racing to think of a name. “Ah” he mutters as the perfect name comes to him.

“While you are living with us; you will no long be called Cupcake he sneers at the ridiculous name that clung to his tongue. “This feline is kittypet no more!” He announces throughout the clearing. “I expect her to be treated as one of you…” he trails off as he stares at the back of Foxpaw. Pursing his lips as he notices how distressed and on edge the young apprentice was. Mentally he debated if he needed to talk to Foxpaw or maybe his mentor. Huffing as he glances away, letting his ember gaze flicker to many felines before once more settling on the newly skyclan apprentice. “While you are under Darkbird’s care…you will be known as Lostpaw. Only when you have proven to have what it takes to be a warrior will you receive your full name” he concludes with a small nod in her direction.

    Darkbird ~ SkyClan Warrior

He refused to look away from Firebirds harsh glare as the dark ginger tabby Tom clearly didn’t like the fact that he was being challenged, and by one of his own warriors no less. However, Firestar was no god and even though he was the leader of this magnificent clan, he wasn’t always right or fair with his judgements. Forcing his jaw to tighten and his golden eyes to harden as he returned the same stubborn glare right back at his leader, refusing to back down to the very intimidating cat. DarkBird was silently grateful when Cupcake began to speak up on her own, naming off a list of chores that she could contribute to the Clan if she was deemed worthy. Although, he did think she cut herself short, even though she was missing a limb, she didn’t seem all that fragile to him. Firestar appeared thoughtful and annoyed as his deep amber eyes kept flickering back and forth between Cupcake and DarkBird. Then again… does Firestar have any other emotion than annoyed and pissed off? He wondered silently to himself, whiskers twitching with unease as the harsh gaze of Firestar landed upon his face as the tabby Tom suddenly regained some thought to the situation.

He should had suspected such a thing from the big brute, eyebrows furrowing ever so slightly in silent annoyance as he figured that was truly the only way that Firestar would have allowed Cupcake to stay. Golden eyes flickered towards Cupcake to see her reaction, before he gave a definite nod in her direction. “Of course.” He promised Firestar, pupils narrowing when his leader mentioned that any screw ups that Cupcake could possibly muster would be his own fault. “As they would of any mentor.” He meowed with a tart tone, although he would take full responsibility for her actions regardless. However, the blood seemed to drain from his face as Firestar declared that Cupcake would now be known as Lostpaw, as if she already hadn’t felt out of place. You’ve got to be kidding me.. He whispered faintly Under his breath; low enough to where Firestar couldn’t hear but possibly loud enough for Lostpaw and Rookfall to hear the disbelief in his voice.

DarkBird felt his eyes land upon the small she-cat, his gaze immediately flickering to where her hind leg should have been. Thats just cruel. He thought angrily, but felt suddenly sheepish that he had been staring, clearing his throat as he looked towards her face and gave a slight sip of his chin. “Welcome to SkyClan… Lostpaw.” DarkBird flinched upon using the name that Firestar has so graciously gifted her. Blazestar wouldn’t have been so cruel. He thought regrettably, but he gave his new apprentice a reassuring smile and a lash of his tail.

    Rookfall

Rookfall was prepared to stand and speak to Firestar until he felt Darkbird’s shift next to him. Surprise lit his eyes as he watched the good-natured tom-cat speak kind words about a…rogue. Although Foxpaw was a tom courageous enough to speak his piece, Rookfall would be lying if he denied his own prejudice toward outsiders. It was something that grew in you from seasons of living in the wild. Yet, that cruelty did not seem to touch the warrior next to him. He stared at Darkbird for several moments, respect glinting in his frosty green gaze, then he turned his face to Firestar. He tipped his head silently in agreement. A soft purr vibrated within him as the flaming ginger leader turned to the fearful she-cat, but the name that slipped from his mighty jaws shut off that warmth. Lostpaw. It was a broken name, an…unwelcome name. Sympathy touched his heart. An apprentice’s name should be one of pride, one of promise, like Foxpaw’s – but he was not one to dispute his own leader, especially now. Firestar was right. Cupc–Lostpaw was not one of them. Yet. She could be taught. She could be molded. He had seen warriors with disabilities. Perhaps she could be of some use, once she gained some muscle on her frail bones.

The tuxedo tom appeared at Darkbird and Lostpaw’s side, a small smile on his face. “Welcome officially, Lostpaw, to SkyClan. I am sure Darkbird will be an excellent mentor to you.” He felt a certain warmth spread within him at the words, but he did not linger on it. He flashed an approving glance to Darkbird, then focused once more on Lostpaw. “My name is Rookfall. I am the Clan’s deputy – or Firestar’s second-in-command. I make sure the Clan is running smoothly, so I will be checking in on your training from time to time. Once you’ve gotten adjusted to Clan life, you will be expected to pull your own weight in the form of patrols. Today, you are welcome to your share of the fresh-kill pile. You’ll need to gain some muscle if you are expected to stay with us.” Although his words were terse and informative, he tried to remain kind.

At first she was happy. She could stay, and the friendly tom, Darkbird, was assigned to teach her… but then Firestar continued to speak. She had assumed they would give her a new name, since all of their names were so strange, but she never could have prepared herself for what came out of the ginger tabby’s mouth. Lostpaw. The name cut deeper than broken glass. It was like she was being punished rather than welcomed, and she couldn’t hide the hurt that filled her gaze. Darkbird and Rookfall both seemed to be put off by the name as well, but neither of them challenged their leader. “Thank you, Firestar…” She said softly, eyes fixated to the ground. If this was what it was like to be a forest cat, maybe she didn’t want to stay here after all. If she snuck out under the cover of darkness, would she be able to find her way off their territory alone?

She was interrupted from her thought process by Rookfall’s voice. He explained his position and a couple other things, but she only half listened. All of that wouldn’t matter to her if she was successful in her escape plan, right? When he mentioned ‘fresh kill’, her eyes followed his towards the pile of prey. Food was the last thing she wanted at the moment. “Thank you, Rookfall, but I’m not very hungry right now,” she murmured, ears pinning back. Who wouldn’t lose their appetite after being named something so cruel? All she really wanted to do was hide. She wanted to get away from all the eyes staring at her, all the whispers about her, all the paws gesturing to where her missing leg should be. She had never felt more humiliated in her entire three years of life than she did at that very moment.
