     Smokestar – Shadowclan Leader

Despite the confusion and alarm, Shadowclan returned from the gathering at dawn. Smokestar waited beside Cherrypaw as her body was moved to the medicine den, pelt prickling with stress. “Alright,” she mewed, giving the apprentice a reassuring smile. “Let’s get this done. Having some help from the ‘outside’ should make this easier, I think.

She lead the way into the den, the scent of herbs and moss greeting her nose. “I might be ‘dead’, but it doesn’t really feel that different,” Smokestar whispered to Cherrypaw. “Is this what our ancestors experience? Or, maybe things are like this due to the moonpool’s condition.

She instinctively stepped aside as Wasppaw entered the den. ‘Wait,‘ she thought. ‘I don’t even need to move, do I?‘ She reached out with a forepaw, touching the tom’s shoulder. “Wasppaw,” she mewed, her eyes pleading. “It’s Smokestar and Cherrypaw. We need you, please see us!

ShadowClan had made their way back to their camp somehow– no, not somehow. Juncoberry had held himself together and united his Clan under Smokestar’s collapse like a true deputy. With his guidance, they were able to support one other and head back home. The grey deputy and his companions carried Smokestar back to camp while he and Hareflight lingered nearby just in case immediate medical attention was needed. As they journeyed back to camp, Wasppaw felt uneasy, but his unease didn’t come from the situation alone– with their leader comatose and StarClan seemingly gone. There was something else that was bothering the healer. It was a feeling gnawing at the back of his mind that he couldn’t get away from. There was something else at play here, he just didn’t know what yet.

Ever since their discovery at the moonstone, the young calico tom had been sensing the most distant hint of their ancestors. Shadows in his peripheral and whispers on the breeze, but nothing anywhere near as clear as what he was used to. It was so weird, so different and confusing. It was like they wanted to talk to him but there was a barrier in the way. It made him nervous and insecure all over again. Just when he thought that he was finally gaining some ground in himself, too.

The apprentice assisted his mentor in placing Smokestar’s body in a fresh, clean nest. They guided her limbs into a comfortable, tucked-in, sleeping position and then sat back. Hareflight told him that she would be keeping the first watch and suggested that he get himself something to eat. He agreed with her without argument. It had been a long day and he was hungry. Wasppaw turned to leave the den, and just as he did, for a moment, he swore that he heard Smokestar’s voice. The hair stood on the back of his neck and he immediately turned to where the leader’s body lay in her nest. Motionless. No signs of consciousness. What was that? He questioned, the anxiety he felt earlier forming a knot of fear into his stomach. The ShadowClan leader was still comatose, how could he be hearing her voice? Confused, the tom’s head jerked in multiple different directions around the clearing, searching desperately for an answer.

And then he found it. Something else completely unexpected.

Before him stood the faintest silhouette of his leader, and beside her, his companion Cherrypaw. He could just barely see them, feel their presence, hear their voices. They felt so far away from him, even though they planted their paws firmly in front of him. “Smokestar? Cherrypaw? Wh- what’s happening?”

    Cherrypaw
    Medicine Cat Apprentice of Riverclan

Cherrypaw was trying to control her breathing, remembering the breathing exercises that Rainysky taught her at the start of her training. The calico molly had a tended to have panic attacks when she was too stressed, but now wasn’t quite the time for that. She had watched Darkstar and Rainysky carry out her body with the help of Firestar, the look on her father’s face was truly something she would forget for the rest of her life. But Smokestar brought a great sense of calm, she was certainly grateful that the gray and white leader was here with her as Cherrypaw would have certainly been lost without her. Following behind Smokestar, the younger molly took a deep breath as she began calming down before catching up to the other molly.

“I hope he can see us.. If anything, we can attempt to throw pebbles to gain his attention.” The small calico said quietly, although she didn’t like the idea of throwing pebbles at Wasppaw.. It was quite rude, but if helped then she would need to. It had felt unusual seeing the Shadowclan camp, especially in this condition. Rainysky brought her once so he can speak to Saplingskies about an injury that the older tom had previous knowledge of. The retired medicine cat was very polite to her, he actually reminded her a lot of her father Darkstar. Her ears perked up as Smokestar spoke and she looked up at the taller molly “I’ve been hearing.. Whispers.” Cherrypaw confessed, but she shook her head slightly “The problem is, I don’t know if they belong to our ancestors or if it’s something else.” She muttered, not quite sure if the two were dead. The molly was trying to figure out if the whispers belonged to the Starclan cats, or the cats around her body.. It was too disoriented for her to figure it out, the reason? Because she was figuring out about her abilities when starting and all of a sudden they had disappeared until coming back recently.

Cherrypaw watched a large black tom approach Smokestar’s body and sat next to her. A look of grief on his face, his eyes were sadden. The calico molly watched for a moment before it hit her that the tom was the Shadowclan leader’s mate as she remembered Smokestar’s announcement of their kits at the Gathering. Looking over, she saw the gray and white molly watching her mate with a sadden expression. Cherrypaw quickly looked away as she felt like she was invading Smokestar’s privacy. She looked over at Wasppaw for a moment, her eyebrows were furrowed at first. It seemed like something was wrong, she couldn’t tell what it was. When Smokestar had told her that the calico tom had abilities, she couldn’t really believe it.. But she shouldn’t say much cause she was just like him.

Watching Smokestar approach the young apprentice, Cherrypaw slowly followed. It wasn’t until she saw Wasppaw notice them, and her bi-colored eyes widened.. So he did see them huh? That was so cool! A small smile appeared on her face as she nodded her head in greetings to her companion “Hey Wasppaw, it’s so nice to see you.” She said softly, remembering being kind.. She may be some kind of ghost, but Cherrypaw still had her manners. Looking around at the medicine cat den, she frowned for a moment before turning to Shadowclan healer to-be “Are you doing okay? You haven’t seen anyone collapsing after we did right?” She questioned, her tail waving back and forth. It was a surprise that she hadn’t seen any other cats like them yet, maybe it affected Smokestar and Cherrypaw since they were in the mooncave when it happened.. But it raised the question, why didn’t it affect the other leaders and meddies?

     Smokestar – Shadowclan Leader

Smokestar watched silently as Ravenwatcher entered the medicine den. ‘Oh Raven,‘ her heart ached. She padded to her nest, taking grief-stricken seat beside her. ‘He’ll have to care for the kits alone while I’m gone.‘ Panic struck her heart, quickening its pace. Her return wasn’t guaranteed. If this was the end, her biggest regret would be missing her childrens’ Warrior Ceremony.

    We have wakeup, somehow.

Blinking tears from her eyes, Smokestar replied to Cherrypaw. “Given the circumstances, I’d guess it’s our ancestors whispering. Out of everyone in the clans, Wasppaw is probably the only soul who can help determine it with certainty.

Wasppaw’s startled mew interjected into their conversation. “Wasppaw!” she mewed. “Thank Starclan you can see us. Cherrypaw is with me, and I believe she has sense similar to your own.” She took a seat, paws shaking with relief. “We have to figure out what’s happening, quickly. Things can’t stay like this. I believe the clans may be in danger if we don’t help Starclan. Else, more of our clanmates may end up like this,” she gestured towards her unconscious form. “Whatever is happening can’t be ignored. We’re all in danger until it’s fixed.

Honestly, I’m not really much help with these sorts of things. But, I was hoping you and Cherrypaw could work together. I’m here to help, however I can. But I’m not … well …” she trailed off. “I never really made heads or tails of Starclan.

Cherrypaw was a sweet girl, he wished that he had it in him to reciprocate as earnestly, but he just wouldn’t be honest with himself if he faked happiness right now. Although, he was of course glad to see her and to know that at least she wasn’t dead, the situation was still grim and the reality of that clung to him like tar. He managed to return her smile though, pairing it with a shake of his head to answer her question. “I wish I could say that, but we’ve had a few more cases since you two have been out of commission. We’ve lost a few lives.” He stated simply, glancing at Smokestar. He was trying to be gentle with the curt information he had to report. “Saplingskies is in a coma as well.” All the more reason they had to do what they could now. He understood very well the severity of their circumstances.

As Smokestar sat before him, he couldn’t help but notice her paws shaking. Despite how scared she must be, the ShadowClan leader’s front was as strong as ever. He admired her for that. Wasppaw nodded thoughtfully as the mottled feline expressed her thoughts regarding their comatose bodies. “We’ll figure out what’s going on,” he stated with resolve, “it’s our jobs as medicine cats to be there when StarClan needs us. Not only for our responsibility to our ancestors, but for our Clan as well.” His bi-colored eyes met Cherrypaw’s. He was sure that she felt the same way he did. “Unfortunately, StarClan hasn’t shown themselves to me in many moonrises… Have you heard or seen anything?”

    Cherrypaw
    Medicine Cat Apprentice of Riverclan

The calico molly’s face fell for a moment, hearing about more cats falling into the similar state that Smokestar and Cherrypaw were in. Cherrypaw looked at Wasppaw and shook her head slightly when the calico tom talked about the lives that were lost and let out a soft sigh, lowering her head. It fully hit her that plenty of lives were going to be lost.. But there isn’t anything that could be done as Starclan couldn’t speak to any of them, especially Wasppaw “We should check around the territories to see if there’s any wandering spirits, and figure out a general area where everyone can check in.” Cherrypaw said, turning to look at Smokestar when making her suggestion for approval. The two she-cats were lucky that both of them were in the same area when falling into their state, but there were going to be many cats that were falling into their coma state and have nowhere to go.. It’s would be best that there’s order between the lost spirits until a solution would be found and everyone could return to their bodies.

“We haven’t seen Saplingskies anywhere at the moment, but we’ll keep a lookout for him.” The smaller calico said, with a frown on her face. Cherrypaw had remembered seeing the retired healer when Rainysky brought her to the Shadowclan camp to speak with Hareflight and Wasppaw and the brown tom had been very kind to her when he introduced himself to her. Cherrypaw looked at the bodies that were in the den already, and she felt a chill run down her spine as she realized that Rainysky would be facing a similar problem back at Riverclan.. The worst part? There was nothing that could be done, and the healer to-be would be helpless as she watched her clanmates falling into a similar state or dying. Her ears perked up when hearing her companion and saw how determined he was, it’s what Cherrypaw needed right now and she released a small breath and nodded.. Right now, Cherrypaw was needed more than ever and it was up to her and Wasppaw to figure out what’s happening

“Wasppaw and I will figure out what’s going on, we have a duty and will do everything we can.” Cherrypaw said turning to Smokestar with a nod, before looking at Wasppaw with a determined face. Right now, the two calicos needed to figure out where to start and it wasn’t until she shook her head slightly “I’ve been hearing whispers..” Cherrypaw said quietly to Wasppaw, feeling a bit awkward about telling the tom about her abilities as not even her siblings knew.. Just her parents and Rainysky. Looking down at the ground, she began pawing at the ground with her right paw as she was trying to touch the pebble in front of her “But the weird part is, the whispers aren’t really clear.. It’s disoriented.” Cherrypaw said, shaking her head slightly and wanted to smack the small pebble but couldn’t.. As she was a spirit.

“We need to figure out what Starclan is trying to say, but the problem is probably within the Mooncave and that liquid.. The main problem is, how do we get rid of it?”

     Smokestar – Shadowclan Leader

Good idea,” Smokestar nodded. “Leave it to me, I’ll search for everyone. I believe the two of you have more critical affairs to handle.” She glanced over at her comatose form once again, feeling anxious. Her body seemed in fair health, but it wouldn’t last. “We can’t stay like this forever. Eventually, our bodies will waste away,” she mewed stiffly, fur prickling as she voiced the horrid truth.

Everything is hanging in a balance,” she continued. “In one paw, we need medicine cats such as yourselves caring for the ill and unconscious. On the other, we need to figure out what Starclan needs us to do. Focus on those two goals and I’ll handle the others’ spirits. When we all come together, we’ll aid you however we can.

She turned to Wasppaw, giving the tom a weary smile. “Juncoberry must act as leader, for now. He will listen to you. That tom adores you, and respects you. He’ll make sure your and Hareflight’s needs are met. Consider visiting the other clans with an escort. We’re all in the same cursed situation, and it’s time we worked together.” She gave him a reassuring brush with her tail, “I trust you, Wasppaw. I know you’ll do everything you can to see us to safety.

Her amber gaze rested on Cherrypaw for a moment, wanting to offer her some encouragement as well. “I’m glad you’re with us, Cherrypaw. Though I haven’t know you long, your heart shines like the sun. If anyone could hear Starclan’s pleas for help it’d be you.

    – W A S P P A W –

StarClan, Smokestar’s faith in him almost overwhelmed him. It made him want to cry, just a little. It was the first time in his career that someone had trusted him so unconditionally to do his job, and not only that, but to tell him that he was respected among his peers as well. For a brief moment, his mind flashed back to when he was just a kit, bullied by his denmates for “saying strange things” or “looking at things that no one else could see”. Oh, how far he’d come.

He could just barely feel the brush of her spirited-away body in contact with his own. Wasppaw propped his chin up proudly. “Yes ma’am.” Cherypaw and himself would leave the comatose spirits to her. For now, his attention returned to his calico counter-part. Come to think of it, he’d been hearing whispers as well lately. None of them had ever been clear enough to make out any words, though. “You’re right,” he replied thoughtfully, going quiet for a moment. Anyone that knew him knew that his mind was running a mile a minute as he thought up several different possibilities for what they could do in this moment. “We should check out the mooncave again. See what the others have discovered about the liquid.”
