    Cottonpaw ~ WindClan Apprentice

Pale blue eyes were narrowing against the pale light that was pulsing from the half moon in the sky, but he didn’t bother to glance up as a soft growl was emitted from his lips. He absolutely hated, guard duty. What was there to guard! WindClan camp was literally an open clearing in which they all lived although it was strategically placed, where he could look one way and see for what felt like badger lengths of clear fields and the same in the other direction. He could clearly spot any danger if there were any. Cream and grey pelt ruffled slightly with irritation as the tall and slender tomcat lowered himself into a sitting position at the edge of the hill that led out of WindClan, ears falling back against his cranium as he glared out at the swaying Heather that danced in the slow breeze of the night. “Oh rabbit dung.” He sighed sourly to himself, eyes rolling to the heavens for a moment before he gazed up at the stars for a hesitant moment.

StarClan was always meddling with things that they didn’t need to be, and for whatever reason the rumor was that when Wolfstar had lost his most recent life that he had been possessed by a dark forest cat that craved nothing but war. Cottonpaw didn’t believe in such tales but with Wolfstar’s erratic and aggressive behavior as of late, he was beginning to believe in something. Slowly he licked at his lower lip as he lowered his chin, nostrils flaring as he breathed in the scents around him, the sweet perfume of the Heather flowers dusting the roof of his mouth. Leaf-fall was around the corner, the nights were getting colder and the breezes throughout the day held the chilly kiss of what was to come. Soon these flowers would die and turn to dried grass, so for now he was enjoying their scent. Long creamy tail swayed out slowly behind him, not daring to curl it around his paws, just in case he needed to jump up. A sound to his left caught his attention; his heart literally stopping and falling to the pits of his stomach as he glared at the tall grass. Lips parting slightly as he breathed in the scent but the wind was blowing towards the source of this sound, ears lifting as he slowly stood up and took a hesitant step forward before the grass parted and revealed a cat but he instantly recognized the warrior to be WindClan.

“A bit of warning would have been delightful.” Cottonpaw snapped, his tone irritable but secretly his heart was beginning to pull itself out of his stomach and settling back into his chest. Cinder whatever his name would be his partner tonight with guarding the camp, which was odd because he had an apprentice and usually Desertrose didn’t push mentors for guard duty but a lot of odd things were happening as of late. Grumpily, he turned his chin away from Cinderbreeze, continuing to glare out over the Heather grass, lowering himself into a sitting position once more before he grazed his chest with his tongue a few times to sooth the ruffled fur.

He padded over to Cottonpaw, enjoying the feel of the cold grass under the moonlit sky. Even as the apprentice snapped at him, he simply took his place beside him. He had been wondering why Burntpaw hadn’t been assigned to be the night guard with him instead of a rude apprentice, but now wasn’t the time. His gray fur ruffled in the slight breeze, and he sighed happily. He wasn’t going to let an apprentice ruin this night, and even though he was supposed to be on guard, it was relaxing.

He stretched, arching his back and letting the muscle ripple in his long legs. His claws unsheathed temporarily as he stretched, before sitting back down. “Nice night tonight, isn’t it?” He shuffled his paws on the ground, he wanted to run through the pale blue light of the moon, running through the cool air in precious WindClan territory, but guard duty was more important. “Do you ever want to see StarClan? I’ve always thought that StarClan is full of prey, with a beautiful starry territory above the clouds.” He sounded awkward, wanting to start conversation with Cottonpaw to make the guarding less awkward. He lifted his muzzle upward, staring at the stars gleaming in the night, wondering which ones were his ancestors.

He looked over at Cottonpaw, studying the apprentice carefully. He had a beautiful cream and grey pelt, but a terrible attitude. He looked back up, staring blankly out of camp, enjoying the breeze. “I’ve always wanted to see StarClan, but I don’t ever want to leave WindClan.” He added, nodding at the apprentice respectfully, as if he was the apprentice looking up at a warrior instead of down at an apprentice.

    Cottonpaw ~ WindClan Apprentice

Cottonpaw couldn’t help but roll his eyes for a moment, smirking faintly as he thought about the question. It was a rather nice night, but that didn’t mean that he wanted to be up all night and guarding, whiskers pulling back slightly for a moment as his lips parted once more as he breathed in quietly through his mouth, enjoying the taste of the Heather flowers. Why were they so calming? Shifting slightly his whiskers pulled back against his cheeks as Cinderbreeze’s voice broke the awkward silence that settled between them. Sighing softly as he finally gave in to the warriors wants for a conversation, pale blue eyes illuminated by the moon high above as he looked towards the grey and black spotted tomcat with a tilt of his chin. StarClan? He personally wasn’t the biggest fan of StarClan, perhaps that’s because they had left him all alone. Cottonpaw was the last descent of his ancestors and he was an utter disgrace. His mother and father had passed away due to a horrible illness that couldn’t have been explained to him, he was the only kit to their litter and his grandparents had died a long time before he had even been born. He was alone and it was the way StarClan chose for it to be, but it was a lonely existence.

Cinderbreeze was a good looking tomcat but he seemed rather naive despite being older than himself, blue eyes watching the tomcat thoughtfully as the warrior was gazing up at the sky as if he could literally see the land of which their ancestors walked. Had he ever really thought about what StarClan territory looked like? Cottonpaw shrugged slightly as he looked away from Cinderbreeze as the other Tom finally looked away from the sky. “I suppose not. Guess I just figured I’ll see it when StarClan comes to take me.” He grumbled slightly, he would die one day and it would be when StarClan chose and that silently bothered him. Nothing was of his doing and he was convinced by it. Chin turned as he looked at the camp behind them for a moment, he was loyal to his clan but he didn’t really have a reason to lay down his life with hesitation. “The way I see it, we will all see StarClan sooner or later, whether we really want to leave or clans or not.” Cottonpaw meowed slowly, his tone low and soft as he looked back towards Cinderbreeze and cleared his throat for a moment. “We will eventually meet our ancestors one day and we will run the territories when we are ready.” He mumbled slightly before he shuffled his paws against the ground and cleared his throat, glancing once up towards the sky to glare at the stars. “If I can help it. I won’t be joining their ranks anytime soon.” Cottonpaw decided, he would die when he was ready and not when they decided.
