Worry had settled deep within her stomach, causing her to be a nervous little thing. Bright amber colored optics were staring down at the moss balls that she had set down in the creek, watching the dry threads expand and turn a luscious green in color as water filled their veins with life. Pupils narrowed faintly as she lost herself in thought, perhaps this water could manage to breathe life back into her close friend. Fallowstream had suddenly caught the black throat plague, and even they were unsure where it was coming from. Although they did know that the animals were carrying it in their bellies and if they weren’t careful when eating, anyone could become infected. Infected. That word echoed in her brain as a frown was beginning to take place. What an awful term.

Paws shifted against the pebbles as she lightly scooped the moss balls onto a flat rock, allowing the extra water to run off. Fallowstream was getting to the point where he could barely swallow food and even swallowing water was pushing his abilities to keep him from choking. Medicine was out the window. She was too scared he would choke on the poultice at this point. They had already lost clanmates due to this plague, would Fallowstream become another victim? Nose winking at that she stooped down to pick up the two balls of moss, water trickling down her chin and splattering down on the ground. Turning back in the direction of camp, she was refusing to have such dark thoughts when there was still a chance that Fallowstream could fight through this plague. He was a strong and capable male, he had this by the tooth! She had to repeat this over and over again to ignore the fact that there hadn’t been one survivor yet amongst the severely affected felines.

Swallowing the small pool of water under her tongue, she tilted her chin back slightly. Taking her time to clear her thoughts, Roseshine didn’t want to appear jaded when she saw Fallowstream. He had enough to worry about and her state of mind didn’t need to be one of them. Walking through camp felt like a faded dream, something she did everyday, carrying the moss to her friend. If she had anything to do to with it, he wouldn’t just fade away like her days. Her eyes landing upon the familiar mottled brown and cream tabby, his face contorted in pain as he curled his thinning body within the nest. Clearing her throat, Roseshine’s heart clenched tightly within her chest as she padded right up to him, unafraid of catching the plague. Lowering her chin, she carefully placed the moss balls on an empty nest, before rasping her tongue over his flaming forehead. “Hey, you.” She breathed softly, lightly rubbing her muzzle against the crown of his head to wake him. He needed to drink and maybe if he was up to it, eat.

Distant talk about an illness spreading through like wildfire had captured the thoughts of many, a strange black goo washing up on the shores of the clan cats causing any who indigested it to fall severely ill or even passing away after a lone grueling time of pain and suffering. Although it hadn’t yet been confirmed to be true the young warrior had remained care free about it. Not yet believing the torture and heartache it could bring by simply existing in the pits of many of his clanmates. When the first death to be called from the oil were sang about, the bodies of his clanmates and foe slowly starting to stack up before his eyes. Causing a tinge of panic within Fallowstream he could all but hope that not only himself but his friends and loved one would never have to suffer through the pain it could cause. The stake of getting ill slowly grew stronger and stronger as it begun to infect the food being brought in from their hunts to the water they drank on the daily to the point that the count of those who had it were majority of the clans. It didn’t help that it was starting to spread by merely being close by those who were infected as well. So those who were free from it were told to stay away in fear that they themselves would end up in the same fate of the clanmates who had to deal with it.

At first the tom had be lucky to have avoided it for as long as he could. Making sure to watch what he ate and who he was around he was able to continue to do his part for his clan. Unfortunately one faithful he slipped and had managed to eat something that had been infected with this plague that hung over everyones head demanding them to dance like mice. The taste had been off and he very knew it but hunger had banged the pits of his stomach having been doing his best to watch for signs sometimes skipping meals when he wasn’t so sure of things. At that very moment he didn’t care as he had gone too long without anything and was desperate in that moment which would later sign his fate. At first nothing had happened but as the days had gone on he started to feel off. His body screaming each time he moved, head pounding loudly against his skull causing his vision to blur in a fit of rage as he tried to stay positive assuming that maybe he just had white cough without the cough or maybe he was just sleeping funny.  The more he had tried to tell himself it was nothing the more he felt his ability to do anything strip away to the point where he wasn’t capable of swallowing the tiniest bit of food to being able to even move without being in blinding pain.

He had prayed to the stars that everything was going to be okay and that what he caught wasn’t what he had so strongly tried to avoid. The more down the rabbit hole he became the more he had started to loose faith in that tiny bit of hope he had held for so long. Admittedly he was starting to give up on ever getting better the fire that was growing through him was starting to get overbearing for him to handle. Having managed to fall in a feverish dream the tom had slept for what seemed like such a short time his body twitching slightly and the obvious pain remained painted on his face. When he had felt a slight nudge against his head he was slow to wake up, his eyes fluttering open as he blankly stared ahead. At first he couldn’t see anything in front of him a mixture of a blinding light yet deathly darkness was all he could muster. The only reason he could tell who was there was the scent he had grown to love yet hate laid thickly in the air.

Every day for who truly knew how long the molly would come day to see him, mostly urging the dying tom to drink what little fluid he could get down to maybe eating a bite or two before he’d give up trying. It was everyday that he was glad to have someone there to be with him, knowing that he may pass with someone by his side brought him comfort. Yet he didn’t like the fact that it had to be her. The one feline that meant the world to him, the one that had managed to get him to question the life of playing around with other felines weren’t meant for him. The one person he didn’t want to fall fate to this torture he endured for so long. Yet day after day she looked death in the eyes and continued to visit him despite the many warnings. His vision slowly coming into focus as he let them shift toward the moss ball the molly had  brought him to the very person herself. Despite the blinding pain he felt he slowly raised his head from his paws a nasty cough rattling his body as he took a shallow breath trying his best to muster a simple, “Hey” in response to her.

Roseshine please stay away… You’ll get sick if you don’t.. was all that he could think about, it was truly something that came about anytime she came around. He’d just hope that maybe she’ll for once listen to the warnings. He wasn’t sure how he could bare knowing she fell ill to this because of him.

Fallowstream did not look well today, his facial expression was bleak and his eyes had lost the luster that she had fallen for. Instead he stared at her blankly, as if wordlessly asking why he was still alive and having to endure this. Her throat tightened up. Because it’s my selfish wish. She thought bitterly, while keeping her soft smile. He didn’t want to be alive at this point and she knew it, but she couldn’t accept it. His chest rattled as a nasty cough escaped him, causing her to frown slightly for a moment. “Maybe I should get some honey from Hareflight.” She suddenly muttered to herself, but would that really calm the burn in his throat? Or make it worse? She would have to ask.

Instead she leaned towards him and lightly licked his shoulder blade, to Roseshine it didn’t matter if he was sick or if she could catch anything he had. No one deserved to be alone. “I’m surprised none of your baby momma’s have come to bother you today.” She joked, it was no surprise to her that he had multiple lovers. Although it was just a joke she liked to say, as far as she knew he didn’t have any kits. Judging from his facial expression, he wasn’t feeling good again today but she wasn’t expecting that. She wasn’t expecting a recovery but she could at least make his time in the living more durable. “Stop looking at me like that.” She whispered. “You know damn well if the roles were reversed you wouldn’t leave me alone either.” She muttered, finally lowering herself to lay beside Fallowstream. He was almost skin and bone from where he hadn’t been eating.

“I got you some water.” She cleared her throat, tenderly reaching out to snag the moss ball with a claw, lifting it closer to Fallowstream so he didn’t have to strain. “Hareflight mentioned that you probably wouldn’t be hungry.” Roseshine muttered, knowing he wasn’t eating was absolutely terrifying but her mother had been preparing her for the worst to come. One of these days she could walk into the medicine den to see him laying there…. Clearing her throat of the dreadful thoughts, she smiled meekly and shifted to where she wasn’t touching him, not wanting to bruise him. “Have some water then you can go back to your nap.” She purred.

There was a part of him that wondered why exactly the molly would risk her life visiting him every day, it was always like clock work the same time of day there she was bringing him water in those stupid moss balls maybe she’d bring something to eat. Granted in his current state he wasn’t able to keep much down let alone swallow. There was a part of him that made him worry, he would never want anyone  to succumb to this…torture. A part of him wanted to make it to where the molly would stop coming do she could stay safe and healthy, yet he couldn’t find it in him to scare her off. He enjoyed her company, it was probably the main reason he pushed to stay alive and not let go.

Hearing her comment about some baby mommas caused the ill feline to wheeze in laughter, a cough racking through his side before he took a few deep breaths. “I’m not s..sure who you’re exactly talking about,he started out before letting out a harsh cough causing him to curl up more in his position before he could really continue. Believe it or not there’s never been someone I’ve been interested in….o..or there wasn’t one until now… now I have a little rose she’s pretty cute you’d like her a lot!He mumbled softly keeping his gaze on the ground. Hopefully he wasn’t blindly obvious that he was talking about her, for some reason her talking like he was playing around with a bunch of cats just rubbed him wrong. Yeah he knew his way around talking to others but he had always assumed that was how everyone normally acted.

When the  feline urged him to take a drink from that wretched moss ball, leaning forward he hooked his claw into it dragging it closer to him. Did it take a lot out of him? Yes yes it did. Did he care? No absolutely not he wasn’t all for acting super helpless despite the fact that he was pretty much on his death bed without really realizing it. Taking only a few licks at the ball he nudged it away resting his head on his paw his eyes feeling rather heavy as another cough racked his body.  At that moment a rather long and pain free nap was all he really wanted.

She would’ve smiled for making him laugh, but she instantly felt horrible as his laugh caused him to choke on his breath and a horrible cough shaking his body. “Oh… I’m sorry.” She instantly meowed, worry creasing her brows as she took a step back in order for him to breathe. Roseshine watched helplessly as he coughed and curled in on himself, obviously in pain because of her joke. Although he found it funny, she told herself mentally that she couldn’t afford to make him laugh like that, not when he was this sick. “I’m sure I could name a few.” She teased him, watching him cautiously before he finally began to regain his breath. Letting out a soft sigh, she tilted her chin in order to gaze at him in a curious manner. Her cheeks warmed as he spoke about a little rose that he felt such affections for.

She hoped it was about her, her heart growing greedy for it to be so. “Well… I hope she likes you back a lot too.” She purred, leaning towards him as she rasped her tongue over his ear. He was tired, but every time he slept, it made her feel panicked. Nothing she could do though. Slowly leaning onto her left side, she watched him as he dragged the moss ball a short ways towards himself. Roseshine wouldn’t admit it, but she felt relief when he licked at the moss ball, taking on some water before he finally gave up and pushed it away. “Thank you.” She whispered, his tail lightly stroking his side in a comforting fashion as she watched him settle in his nest.
