A quiet sigh escaped the coal furred tom’s rubbery hued lips as he basked in the silence that enveloped around him. Large paws pressing into the damp earth, causing his toes to spread apart. Wrinkling his nose in slight distaste at the feeling of the moist soil clinging to the thin webbed skin between his dark paws as the young tom trenches on his little adventure. After his little conversation with Cloudedpaw a few days prior the tunnel systems had peaked his interest considerably. Frowning ever so slightly at the thought of the she-cat apprentice came to mind as they did not get off on the right paw so to speak due to his abrasive behavior and snarky words that he tends to have no control over leaving his lips. Pale sunflower eyes flickered around his surroundings, taking in ever little detail as if commuting it to memory to remember the course he had chosen.
Grinning in triumph as his destination came into view before him. Slowing his pace that he hadn’t even noticed sped up, showing just how eager he had become on his little conquest to explore the tunnels himself. Inwardly reprimanding himself for his kittish (I know it’s not a real word but didn’t want to use childish lol) behavior with a firm shake of his wedge cranium. Stoping before the entrance of a single tunnel. Briefly he studied the soil made tunnel, his long tail twitching at the eerily feeling of the darkness swallowing anything within the confinement’s of the tunnel. Squaring his slim shoulders as he takes an unnecessary deep breath before slipping into the darkness ahead.June 30, 2019 at 9:14 pm #1944
The Tunnels were not necessarily a place that Dawncloud preferred to venture to. It was dark, damp, and cold– even in Green-leaf. As a ShadowClan cat, even, she could not find herself getting used to the dimly lit environment and the wet, muddy ground in which they put their paws. The diluted calico found her expression scrunching up into a scowl as she placed her paws down on the squishy ground and they once again sank under her weight into the softened earth below her.
This area of ShadowClan territory specifically just gave her the creeps. Warriors didn’t often come here unless they had apprentices to train, but she did not yet have an apprentice of her own. Therefore, she did not particularly have a reason to come to the tunnels. Prey did not run well underneath the area and it was well within their borders, so they did not often have to worry for outside Clans popping up here. And yet, she found herself oddly in search of somewhere quiet and secluded.
Of course, Dawncloud had no idea that she was not the only one lurking within the Tunnels. She had come along far after the apprentice that slipped in here before her. So surely, they were both in for a rude surprise.June 30, 2019 at 10:10 pm #1956
A strong musty odor filled his nostrils as he traveled deeper into the dark and dank tunnel. Eyes squinting ever so slightly as he wasn’t fully used to the secluded darkness around him, this was a whole new environment and Roachpaw couldn’t help but wonder why such an innocent feline such as Cloudedpaw would like such a place; it counteracted her in many ways. Though as the dark tom ventured through the chasm he couldn’t help but let his stiff shoulders slack ever so slightly as he slowly started to become accustomed to the environment around him. Paper thin ears twitching as his hearing became heightened for his guidance. Roachpaw could hear the faintest sounds that ranged from the scurry of rats that were disturbed by his sudden presence — to the pitter patter of water, further down the tunnel continuously hit the muddied ground.
Pausing midstep as the young apprentice suddenly became aware that he wasn’t fully alone. Not far behind he could hear the normal rhythm of breathing as well as muffled paw steps coming his way. Roachpaw tilts his head in contemplation as he weighs his options on whether or not he should confront the other feline or continue venturing on his lonesome deeper into the tunnel. Grunting as he decided it would be best if he waited for them to catch up with him. Blinking owlishly as he looks around his boredom in wait, but soon a mischievous grin tugs at the corner of his black lips at the faint out line of a pebble a few mouse lengths away. Sure he had decided to be considerate and wait for the other feline even if his company was not wanted, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t have some fun while he waited.
Perfect. He thought as he silently shuffled over to the pebble, tail flicking in anticipation as he rose his large paw. Lining his paw up with the pebble before giving the stone a forceful hit. A loud clank echoing throughout the tunnel as the stone bounced against the solid dirt walls. His ears perking as he listened carefully for any reaction from the cat heading his way. Of course his little stunt was made to scare, but who knows what could become of his impulsive and kittish move.June 30, 2019 at 10:26 pm #1964
She really was just minding her own business. Walking steadily and calmly into the darkness of the tunnels, her whiskers brushed along the edges of the walls, guiding her where to further place her paws into the empty space in front of her. Dawncloud’s eyes did not adjust for a long while, not until she was a little deep into the underground tunnels did she start to see the curves and shapes of her surroundings.
However, her search for a quiet walk to herself in the late evening hours was abruptly interrupted by a clattering coming from much ahead of her. The warrior’s fur stood on end and she jumped slightly at the very sudden noise, though she found herself quickly relaxing as she realized that the object blundering at her was just a small pebble. Immediately, she felt ridiculous. She was a grown warrior and yet she was startled by a piece of debris?
Dawncloud sighed to herself and continued on her way down the tunnels, but it wasn’t until she got a little more ways in did she spot another cat sitting, perhaps in wait, ahead of her. The scent of ShadowClan reassured her that this other cat was not an invader, but a Clanmate of her own. Given the direction of these tunnels, she knew that they could have more than likely been aware of her presence before she was of theirs’. Her tail flicked in irritation and she narrowed her eyes in the dark at the other feline.
“That trick was quite distasteful.” She remarked.June 30, 2019 at 10:50 pm #1966
A quiet, amused snicker escaped his maw as he settled down on his rump as he patiently waited for the appearance of the unknown feline that had also entered the twist and turns of the abandoned tunnels. His long slick tail gracefully wrapped around his large paws, his pale gaze flickering to his paws for a brief moment in distaste as he noted the mud covering his once pristine ebony paws. That wouldn’t be fun to clean later, the taste of mud wasn’t a favorite of his, yet living in Shadowclan for moons should have him use to the bitter taste. Leaning forward ever so slightly as he caught a faint gasp echo around him, letting the lanky tom know that his little ploy had been mildly successful nonetheless.
Finally the mysterious feline is revealed. Roachpaw arches a brow as he quickly deciphers that the cat before him is a she-cat and by the looks of it; a warrior. Humming in curiosity as he wondered if she too had just wanted to explore until he was rudely disrupted her quiet time. Ears and feathery white whiskers twitching as Dawncloud spoke towards him and from the tone, she hadn’t been amused with his little trick. His sunflower gaze locks with hers as he offers her an amused, yet sincere smile, “I’ll admit not my best work, but it was the best I could come up with on such short notice” was his sarcastic reply, his expression not matching his tone whatsoever. Roachpaw just couldn’t help his snarky comments, when it came to mind it just had to come out.July 6, 2019 at 9:31 pm #2172
Apprentices these days certainly held no respect for their seniors, Dawncloud noted with a sigh at Roachpaw’s sarcastic reply to her statement. The diluted calico gave a flick of her tail as she approached the younger feline and joined him by where he sat in the underground tunnels. “Normally I wouldn’t venture down to these tunnels by myself. I find them quite dreary and uncomfortable,” She confessed, turning her blue eyes to the apprentice, “but I found that I’d needed a get-away for a little while. How about you?”July 6, 2019 at 9:46 pm #2174
The young apprentice was certainly caught off guard when the older feline approached him and had decided on making conversation with him after his little prank. Arching a brow as he eyes her for a moment, debating if this little socialization was worth his time as he had originally came down to the depths of the tunnels to finally do some exploring. Pursing his lips as he huffs quietly to himself as he soon came to realize that he was stuck with the warrior. It was after all his fault on why they were talking now, if Roachpaw has just minded his own business and continued on maybe he wouldn’t be dealing with Dawncloud at this moment.
Running his salmon pink tongue along his teeth before speaking, “There are plenty of other places to venture for some peace of mind if you are scared of this place” he retorted with a sassy flick of his sleek tail. Rising to his large paws, shaking his shiny coat of dirt clinging to his black pelt. Padding a few mouse lengths away from the diluted calico before pausing and looking over his shoulder with a daring arch of a brow, “Are you coming?” He mused. Roachpaw wasn’t one to show respect towards anyone older and with higher authority as he tended to talk how he pleased.July 7, 2019 at 2:52 pm #2180
Dawncloud narrowed her eyes at Roachpaw’s retort. “I’m far from scared of these tunnels,” she replied with a defiant lash of her tail, “I just prefer open spaces.” She would curse the depths of the place of No Stars before she would let an apprentice think that she didn’t like the tunnels– even if it may be true. Nevertheless, she followed the tom on steady paws as he signaled that he were about to lead them elsewhere for the evening venture. Dawncloud was not necessarily the biggest fan of exploration as a whole, as an apprentice herself, she usually stuck to her mentor’s side and didn’t journey off. However, every once and a while, a little trip could tend to be worth it.
“Where are we going off to, then?” She questioned the black tom, glancing over towards him as they continued to pad on.July 7, 2019 at 3:39 pm #2184
Smirking as the younger tomcat listens to the female warrior defend herself about not being scared of the tunnels. Flicking the tip of his tail as if he was shrugging at Dawncloud. Sunflower yellow eyes glance around the solid-dirt walled tunnels, taking in every detail with fascination. This was Roachpaw’s first time being in the tunnels and it was certainly interesting, but one thing that he truly wondered was; where did the tunnels leave out? Did it become a dead end or open up to another part of the territory? That was something he wanted to find out. Yet with so many twist and turns and side tunnels, it might take him moons to truly figure it out.
Mentally he acknowledged that he needed to stay focused and stay on the straight path to know the way out. Ears twitching as he sensed Dawncloud pad behind him, catching up with him in ease as they continued to venture together. At her question he huffed as he rolled his eyes, looking over at Dawn before looking straight ahead, “I have no idea, isn’t that what makes it fun?” Roachpaw grinned at the thought of a little adventure.July 7, 2019 at 4:00 pm #2187
“Not to me.” Dawncloud replied bluntly, flattening her ears to her skull as they walked together deeper into the tunnels. Did any ShadowClan cat really know where they would end up if they wandered down in here, she thought to herself. They could potentially be lost down here for the rest of their lives, until they joined StarClan, for all they knew and the very thought sent anxiety pulsing rapidly through the warrior’s veins. Normally, Cinderfoot would be by her side to calm her from her irrational panic such as moments like this, but since his death, Dawncloud found herself horribly alone.
Thinking of her past mate made the diluted calico all-the-more anxious. Would I see him sooner if I stayed down here? She wondered. Then she shook her head harshly. Thoughts like that would get her no where, and she had to think of the apprentice with her. As a warrior, she was his senior and his safety should be her priority, not thinking about a love she had lost. Irritated with herself, Dawncloud huffed. “We don’t even know what’s down here, do we? Isn’t it foolish to walk blindly into danger?”July 7, 2019 at 4:42 pm #2191
The dampness of the tunnels caused his fur to stand on end as he wasn’t use to the sudden drop in temperature. The faint scurrying of rodents could be heard, yet the dark tom made no motion to hunt them down. He was just down here to find out what was so interesting about these abandoned tunnels as he had heard Cloudedpaw mention once before he offended her. Humming softly to himself as he found the tunnels relaxing in a eerie way, the darkness and the silence was calming. Paw steps echoing against the enclosed walls as they ventured forward, “You haven’t been in the tunnels before have you?” He accused with an arched brow. He was slightly judging the warrior since she was indeed a warrior and should be more aware of the territories of Shadowclan.
“Many other felines have explored these tunnels and they are fine. Besides I’m sure I can protect us if necessary” his tone coated in sarcasm as he didn’t even bother to look over at Dawncloud. To him the tunnels were not dangerous just another place to roam when he grew bored being within camp or listening to his mentor, Hornetstar. “Now are you going to explore with me or complain the whole time?” He groaned as he glares over at the warrior with pursed lips.July 7, 2019 at 5:57 pm #2196
After another snide comment from the apprentice, Dawncloud realized exactly who she was venturing along the tunnels with– this was Roachpaw, Hornetstar’s mentor. One would think that being a leader’s apprentice would be humbling and would surely teach the younger cats of the Clans to learn manners, but that didn’t seem to be working for the dark-furred tom. His nasty attitude was well-known among the other warriors, perhaps that’s why Hornetstar decided to take him on himself, to try and make him a little more sociable to his Clanmates.
Either way, the she-cat wasn’t particularly in the mood to deal with a younger cat’s retorts and nasty attitude. “Fine then, you can explore by yourself. I’m returning to camp.” She snapped back with a snarl. She did not wait for the apprentice’s response before she turned tail and trotted right back in the opposite direction, outside of the tunnels and on her way back to ShadowClan camp grounds.
