    HORNETSTAR.

After ensuring his chosen Clanmates – Roachpaw, Scarletflood, and Snappingfox – were following, he had set off on a brisk pace up the mountain. Clearly he was still seething about the incident that had taken place when SkyClan arrived, the tip of his tail flicking about every once in a while. Eventually he did slow down though, throwing a glance back to make sure he hadn’t lost anyone. When he noticed his patrol had gained two extra cats though, he had to do a double take. He was honestly surprised to see the two SkyClan warriors, Snowyowl and Honeysplash, but wasn’t going to complain. At least SkyClan had the common sense to send some warriors on this important patrol, even if they only sent two. And they weren’t very impressive looking warriors at that. Honestly, Hornetstar thought Roachpaw showed more promise than them. Roachpaw!

“Keep your eyes peeled for anything that looks like it could possibly pass as shelter. A cave is preferred, but we might have to settle for a rock outcropping if that’s all we can find,” he called out over the wind. The wind and rain seemed to be getting worse as they headed up the mountain, but at least here the water couldn’t soak into the ground and making everything that much more miserable. Besides, if the flooding got any worse in the forest, they really would want to be up the mountain as far as possible. Hopefully prey had gotten the same idea as the Clan cats and decided to retreat up the mountain.

Honeysplash grimaced as the gale buffeted his ears. Even the sound of the rain was drowned out beneath the wind’s eerie howl. Shadowclan’s leader, Hornetstar, was clearing trying to speak over the wind. But, from Honeysplash’s position he couldn’t make out a single word. ‘Yowling into the wind,’ he silently grumbled, his irritation palpable. ‘That’s working real well.’ He rolled his shoulders, trying to relieve his fatigued muscles. Surely it would all be fine, he knew what they were here for.

He couldn’t pin all of his sourness upon the Shadowclan leader. His icy blue gaze flicked towards SnowyOwl. ‘Firebird, you piece of foxdung,’ he silently swore. Of course his brother had put them together purposefully. However, he and the white molly still had unresolved differences. It’d been almost two moons since their last argument, but only a pawful of words had been exchanged between them. Perhaps it was all due to sheer stubbornness. Or, perhaps the two felines were more shy than they let on. He snorted, feeling angry at himself. ‘I’m like a quarreling apprentice,

He looked around, considering their prospects at finding shelter upon the mountain. It was a mostly uncharted area. It wasn’t particularly useful to any of the clans since the environment was too harsh. Perhaps the rocky outcroppings would provide some shelter. But, there might be dangerous things lurking within the shadows. He swallowed hard, feeling uncomfortable. They were all weak and exhausted, they didn’t need a fight right now.

    SnowyOwl ~ SkyClan Warrior

She grunted slightly as her paws tried to slip on the wet rocks along the side of the mountain, her claws slipping from their sheathes as she tried to keep her balance. “Oof..” Snowyowl grumbled as her paws almost slipped out from underneath her. Nose scrunching up ever so slightly for a moment as she found herself to be rather irritated with the rain, causing her snowy white to stick to her slender frame like a secondary skin. Paper thin ears standing upright on top of her head as Hornetstar spoke, pupils narrowing ever so slightly as she tried to listen to what he was saying.

Cave or overhang.. She thought silently to herself, barely catching what he had said, although her bright yellow eyes flickered towards that of Honeysplash as he walked a few paces infront of her. Watching the tomcat for a moment as she felt a small frown pull at the corner of her lips. They really hadn’t spoke much to each other since their fight, but then again he seemed too irritated to look at her. Sighing softly, her head lowered as she looked away from him, pupils narrowing as she looked around, trying to see through the rain in order to see if she could spot a dark overhang or a darkened pit indicating a cave. However, she couldn’t really spot anything, a gentle hug leaving her nostrils before she slipped against the mud, causing her to bump into Honeysplash as she leaned fully into him before regaining her balance. Ears laying flat against her skull while she looked at Honeysplash and muttered. “Oh… I’m so sorry..” She gasped, clearly surprised she was having an issue with the terrain, her claws digging into the soft mud beneath them. Eyes flashing towards Snappingfox and Roachpaw before she looked away again, side glancing towards Honeysplash. He may have been angry with her and probably didn’t want anything more to do with her.. however, she couldn’t help but have a tender spot in her heart for the handsome tomcat.

    Roachpaw ~ Shadowclan Apprentice

Frowning at the uncomfortable silence that filled the air, his pelt along his spine ruffled as he silently follows after Hornetstar, Scarletflood, and Snappingfox. The tall apprentice decided to remain behind the more experienced Shadowclan felines. Not that he believed was any less experienced than Snappingfox, he just wanted to stay far away from his mentor knowing that he wasn’t the best with keeping his trap shut. His ears twitching at the whispering howls of the wind as they trench up the mountain side. Tilting his cranium downwards to shield his sunflower yellow eyes from the icy rain that showered angrily down on him and his fellow comrades. Letting his gaze lock on his paws, watching where he steps, muscles tensing at the thought of slipping. His lips tightening as he wouldn’t admit it out loud but this brave feline has a small fear of heights, something he couldn’t control but he was not going to allow such a small thing become his defining weakness when they had more pressing matters to deal with than his rational, yet irrational fear.

His yellow eyes flickering up ever so often to make sure he was a safe distance away from those in front of him. Holding his breath as he heard a muffled gasp from one of the Skyclan warriors, it would seem that someone was not having the best of times with this weather plus the mountainous slope was not helping matters. “Cave or outcropping. That can’t be so hard. We are just on a edge of a lonely mountain, nothing to fear” he sarcastically muttered to no one in particular. Scowling to himself as he grew bored of the ever lasting silence. It didn’t help that he was the only apprentice tagging along on this expedition, though now that he stopped to think about it…wouldn’t have made much of a difference as the ebony tom did not have much friends. Roachpaw loves his space, hates being surrounded by so many cats, and the worst had to be actually communicating with his peers. What a nightmare. ‘Wonder if we will be able to even find a big enough enclosure to hold this big lot’ he pounded with a furrow to his kitty brows at the sudden thought.

Opening and closing his mouth several times, feeling the dryness of his rough salmon pink tongue against the roof of his mouth. Silently he debates within himself about voicing his concerns before deciding hell with it. Not like Hornetstar could reach him and tear him a new one with two felines between them. “And what if we can’t find shelter big enough for all of us? Will we have to split up?” His Voice orotund, as he made sure to project his words loud and clear for all to hear his inquiry of the situation. Yet, while Roachpaw was too busy talking, he wasn’t paying much attention which lead to his right paw slipping on a loose stone. Cursing to himself as he flings himself against the wall of the mountain. Chest heaving as he calms his nerves at his near death experience if he hadn’t acted quickly. Ears flattening against his skull in embarrassment, chuckling nervously as he gives those looking at him a grin, “Oops” was all he said before nodding to continue on. ‘Just my luck I would make a fool out of myself on an important mission. Stupid rain. Stupid mountain. And stupid rock’ he fumed, his tail lashing side to side sharply to indicate his irritation toward himself and the situation.

    HORNETSTAR.

This weather was utterly ridiculous. If there was a StarClan, they clearly hated the Clans right now. Why else would the weather take such a turn for the worst at the beginning of Leaf-fall? If things didn’t start drying up now, Leaf-bare would certainly be a struggle to pull a whole Clan through. But Hornetstar couldn’t worry about that right now. One problem at a time, so he could put all his energy towards tackling it. If- No, when, ShadowClan managed to pull through this, then he’d move onto the problem of surviving Leaf-bare. For now he pinned his ears to his head, squared his shoulders, and plowed on up the mountain through the wind.

“Splitting up would be the worst idea possible, Roachpaw,” he called back to his apprentice, turning to look back at the young tom. Of course, at that moment Roachpaw’s paw slipped on the wet rock. The golden tom’s green eyes widened slightly, body unconsciously making a move to save the apprentice. It became quickly apparent the apprentice was fine though, Hornetstar releasing a mental breath of relief. Truthfully, he should have never allowed Roachpaw on this little adventure. Now he’d spend the rest of the time wasting part of his energy worrying about his apprentice. Great.

He had to admit, walking on the wet rocks was hard. And with some of the rocks being loose, that made things even worse. StarClan don’t let anyone go over a ledge, he thought, knowing he’d be unable to live with the guilt if someone did. Even if it was a SkyClanner. This had been his idea, he was in charge, their deaths would be on his head. “This way, it looks like their might be a cave up there,” he commented, idly pointing with his tail in the direction he was speaking of. Further up the mountain, after a path of more soil like ground, there was a darker speak on the side of a rock face. Either it was a trick of the light, or a cave. Hopefully a cave.

Ah, mousedung!’ Honeysplash slipped as SnowyOwl skidded into him. He let out a ragged sigh as he regained his footing. “Careful,” he mewed. “We both know my track record with heights and slipping.” He gave a weak chuckle, his stomach feeling sour. He knew their mission was important, but the treacherous climbing conditions were putting lives at risk. They could handle it, but would some of their weaker clanmates successful make the journey?

He drew closer to SnowyOwl, standing between her and the mountain’s treacherous ledge. Honestly, the golden-tom didn’t really want to play a protective role. But, SnowyOwl looked a bit outside her element. Climbing stones was nothing like climbing trees after all. “Use your claws less,” he mewed. “If you can widen your stance a bit, should make the climb a little easier.” His gaze met hers for a moment. ‘She’s beautiful,‘ he thought as he peered into her yellow eyes. Of course, they were completely drenched to the skin. Yet she retained a certain beauty that he couldn’t quite name.

He was torn back to reality as Hornetstar called out to the patrol. “By Starclan it’d better be shelter!” He quickened his pace, yearning for rest. They’d figure out everything else later. For now, they needed a moment’s respite.

    Snowyowl ~ SkyClan Warrior

Ears were firmly tucked back against her slim skull from the embarrassment that warmed her face, she was usually hardly ever clumsy and the fact that she had slipped and bumped into Honeysplash of all toms, only made her feel more so uncomfortable. Yellow eyes narrowing as she didn’t find his remark to be funny at all, it was because of his past injury that they had hardly spoken or looked at each other in the first place. However, she bit her tongue as she knew they were in the company of ShadowClan cats they wouldn’t be one bit interested in their… what was it? She knew they had been friends but honestly had she begun to feel something more?

Muscles strained in her shoulders and legs as she fought with keeping a good grip on the stones, her tired limbs wanting to collapse underneath of her. “I don’t think that’s funny at all.” She muttered slightly, her head pointed down as she had to watch where she stepped, trying to be more careful. SnowyOwl noted the way he silently walked between her and the mountain ledge, obviously he didn’t have to do it… but silently she was grateful. Heights never bothered the she-cat but falling from the height in which they walked, she wouldn’t survive. Claws less? SnowyOwl thought as she looked towards Honeysplash with a look of bewilderment in her yellow gaze, although her eyes flickered down to his paws as she noticed his claws were sheathed and his toes spread out. “Okay… I slip again though, you owe me a sparrow.” She joked softly, giving a small smile as she sheathed her claws, toes flattening against the wet rocks. She gazed at Honeysplash when he looked at her, his eyes soft and his expression… curious? Or was it just a softer emotion? For a moment she thought he was going to speak, her heart quickening for a moment before the harsh sound of Hornetstar’s voice, eyes closing for a moment when Honeysplash rushed past her. “Nevermind…” She whispered softly to herself, opening her eyes and silently following the group to the supposed cave, snowy white fur soaked and paws aching.

Snappingfox padded silently alongside his clanmates… and some SkyClan cats. When did they get here? He asked himself, doing a double take to make sure he wasn’t mistaken. Nobody had invited them to come along. The red tom snorted bitterly, tail lashing, but he said nothing. He needed to focus on the task at hand, and he couldn’t keep an eye out for a cave if he was complaining. The sound of cats slipping on rocks was making him nervous, especially that SkyClan cat that kept falling over herself and making doe eyes at the SkyClan tom accompanying her. Gross. If the mousebrain fell over the edge, no doubt SkyClan would blame ShadowClan, even if it was the fool’s own damn fault. When Hornetstar mentioned that he spotted a cave, Snappingfox let out a sigh of relief. Hopefully it was a cave and was big enough for two whole clans. If they got up there and it was two small, but would have comfortably sheltered ShadowClan alone, he was going to toss those damn SkyClan cats off the edge himself.

“Watch your paws,” he grumbled to Snowyowl as he passed her, making sure to pass on the side closer to the edge so she wouldn’t move to give him more room and go plummeting to her demise. “We don’t need any SkyClan deaths on our heads right now.” With that, the ever so charming warrior bounded to catch up with Hornetstar. There was no way in hell he was going to linger in the back with the SkyClanners. He may have been thoroughly soaked and covered in mud, but he still had self-respect.

    Roachpaw ~ Shadowclan Apprentice

Ears still pinned against his skull, sunflower yellow eyes turning a darkened gold at the fluctuation of his emotions. Letting a scowl take over his sharp features as he had a hard time containing his irritation on loosing his footing on a pebble. A pebble! How lame! If he was going to die anytime soon slipping on a small rock was not the way to go. Shaking away the scowl as his mask was soon replaced with indifference as the young apprentice stuffed his anxiety deep down to the point his body language screamed aloof, without a care. Though deep within himself he was terrified at what could have happened if it hadn’t been for his quick reflexes, he was also puzzled at Hornetstar’s reaction. Even though Roachpaw didn’t voice it, surprisingly, he had noticed his mentor and leader shift in his direction in worry. ‘I knew it! I’m leaving some sort of impression on him! Good or bad…eh who cares! His life would be boringly normal if it weren’t for me’ Roach thought with a hidden smirk before picking up his pace to follow after his fellow shadowclanners.

Straightening up at the mention of maybe a cave nearby definitely caused his spirits to rise. All the lanky feline wanted to do was eat and sleep, something he knew he wouldn’t be getting unless shelter was found. Rolling his eyes at the brooding tone of Snappingfox as he made jabs at one of the Skyclan felines for their ungracefulness on trenching up the mountain. Scoffing as he took it as an insult of his own clumsiness not minutes prior. Shooting the older tom a reproachful look before giving him a mocking smile, “Oh better watch your step, few lose stones lying about. Wouldn’t want you to fall” he snapped before turning away as he knew that in order to keep his mouth shut, he needed to focus elsewhere. His long slick black tail flicking side to side in sharp movements as he follows behind. Grimacing as it suddenly occurred to him that the two Skyclan felines could take his words as defending them when that was not the case at all. Far from it actually; Roachpaw was only lashing out due to his wounded pride and Snappingfox just had to be the trigger with his condescending words.

Scarletflood had remained quiet to this point. Her fur, which usually gave her a large, intimidating silhouette, was flattened down against her thin frame, and her expression showed just how agitated she was growing – not only with the weather and the situation, but with these cats – ShadowClanners and SkyClanners alike – acting like kits. She had been following close behind her brother throughout the entire walk, but now she stopped walking, her golden eyes pinning on those behind her.

Hornetstar has mentioned that it looks like there might be a cave, and you’re making jabs at one another.” She paused, tail lashing once, water droplets flying. “It would make this patrol all the more bearable if you would all grow up and stop acting like kits – at least until we figure out if there really is shelter ahead.” Maybe this was a bit harsh for what had been going on – they really hadn’t been bickering that much, but with tensions high, Scarletflood refused to deal with nonsense like that. Not on such an important mission.

Once that was said, Scarletflood stalked up to walk beside Hornetstar, gently brushing his shoulder in a motion of support, while still keeping her professional posture. “Here’s hoping it’s a cave.” She muttered, glancing to her brother. She refused to even think about what would happen if they couldn’t find shelter in the mountains – or if they ran into a predator. A prickling feeling ran down her spine at this, and she let out a sigh, fixing her gaze forward, ears pinning back as she concentrated on what she desperately hoped would be shelter.

    HORNETSTAR.

The golden tom was now almost resolutely ignoring the other cats on his patrol, of course keeping one ear open for anything that sounded bad, but for the most part continuing right on along. He didn’t care if they got along or not, so long as this damn mission got done. The rain had become more than annoying and he just wanted a place to get out of it in, to hopefully dry off a little and feel less heavy. He glanced at Scarletflood as she walked up and gently brushed their shoulders together, glad she had come along. Some idiot might end up dead otherwise. On purpose or not, no one would ever be able to prove.

“I’m surprised SkyClan sent some warriors with, but at the same time I wished they stayed behind. Less likely for problems to arise then,” he commented, blinking furiously as a particularly harsh onslaught of rain was blown in on a gust. He had just set his paw down on relatively solid mud when he suddenly felt it shift under him. Caught off guard, he stumbled a bit, eyes widening as he felt the ground shifting underneath his back paws as well. Glancing up the mountain, he saw a wave of mud coming at them. Not good, not good at all.

He glanced back at the rest of the patrol even as he fought to keep his own footing, making certain none of them had gone over an edge or fallen down. “Back to solid rock! Get off the mud,” he screeched, already turning back around to start bounding towards a piece of solid rock ahead. He glanced over his shoulder, hoping to see Scarletflood right beside him.

Honeysplash closed his eyes, SnowyOwl’s gentle scent lingering in his nose. It washed away his pain and exhaustion, leaving behind a warm buzz. It was a feeling he’d never felt before. He was known as the clan casanova and was no stranger to love. But, this she-cat made him feel things he’d never felt before. He sighed heavily as he shook the droplets hanging from his whiskers. ‘Probably too late now,’ he thought miserably. He desperately wanted to discover what made SnowyOwl so different. But a wedge, mostly created by his own bitterness and anger, had been driven between then. He certainly considered her a friend. And, he was certain she felt the same. But his bitterness and anger had created a chasm between friendship and something … more?

Deep in thought, he tuned out most of Shadowclan’s squabbling. He couldn’t be certain whether it was the typical Shadowclan grumpiness that had spurred them on, or whether it was hunger and discomfort causing the irritability. He snorted, thinking that Firebird would fit in quite well with Shadowclan. He was certainly grumpy enough to join them.

The ground beneath his feet turned to slick mud, causing him to slow his pace. Water splashed his belly, chilling his skin. ‘This is disgusting,’ he silently grumbled as he wrinkled his nose. Suddenly the ground lurched and Hornetstar yowled in alarm. ‘What’s going on?!’ He turned, looking up towards the hill as more mud poured towards them. He froze for a moment, icey panic clawing at his chest. ‘SnowyOwl! She’s already terrified!’ He turned, blue eyes wide with alarm as he rushed towards her. “Snowy, move it!” He pushed her shoulder, desperately trying to guide them towards safety.

    Roachpaw ~Shadowclan Apprentice

Closing his eyes as he briefly remained still, letting the coldness of the rain sooth his heated flesh and his riled nerves. Chest rising and nose flaring as he takes a deep needed breath, letting the taste of rain and earthen tones clinging onto his taste buds. Once he contained his easily rattled emotions did he finally open his eyes to the scenery around him. A look of puzzlement itching onto his handsome young features as he soon realized that he was now taking up the rear end. Blinking owlishly for a brief moment as he absorbs where and what was going on. ‘Right….find shelter’ he reminded himself. It seemed that the longer he went without food and water, the more muggy his brain became. Shrugging his slim shoulders as he soon decided that he did not mind taking up the rear. Kept him away from the others as he did not have the patience to listen to those around him. Slowing his pace as he puts distance between him and them.

Though if you looked closely, his black ears would twitch every now and then at the sounds of their voices flowing into his ears. Scowling as he caught onto Scarletflood’s words, scoffing at her supposedly hurtful and abrasive words. Rolling his darkened yellow eyes as well making a ridiculous facial expression and sticking his tongue out mockingly behind her back. ‘Kits huh? What does that make her? A grouchy elder?’ He mentally snipped back with a smug grin appearing on his maw. Roachpaw did not care that she is the sister of his leader and mentor, to him she was a feline with a stick so far up her ass that he bet she couldn’t even sit down without a scowl on her face or a cold comment. It was obvious that Hornetstar and Scarletflood are siblings, ‘The bitchiness must be genetic’ Roachpaw snidely thought with a hum of approval.

It gave the tall tom something to keep his mind on as he silently trekked after the rest of the patrol. If he couldn’t snidely talk back, he surely would in his head. It was just as satisfying, as he could just picture Scarletflood’s face if he dared to say such words out loud. Being so absorbed within his own thoughts, he did not realize that they had come to a sudden stop. Though he soon found out when he rammed right into Snowyowl. Grunting in surprise and irritation; “Why the hell did we-“ Roachpaw cuts off at Hornetstar’s screech of a command. Fur bristling with sudden burst of anxiety as he rapidly looks around before the shock wave within the mud beneath his paws started.

Jaw clenching as the mud thickens around his dark paws, making it harder for the apprentice to maneuver. Eyes widening, muscles tensing in panic as his gaze lands on the mud slide trailing down the mountain side at an alarming fast pace. Cursing colorfully at their dilemma, struggling as he quickly runs after his fellow patrol mates, gritting his teeth as he pushes through the sticky mud that tried to mold him in place. Wildly looking around for a safe place to seek shelter, only find very little. Whiskers quivering with anxiety before he ungracefully hops over a small boulder, slamming his slender form against the cold, hard surface. Curling into a ball for his body to fit behind the stone. Chest heaving up and down rapidly as he risks peeking over the stone to see if the other felines where able to find some where to protect themselves in time. ‘Why does this have to happen now?!’

Scarletflood listened to her brother speak, nodding in agreement. It was true, they needed to be a team and it was all the more difficult when they weren’t familiar with these SkyClan cats. As her brother stopped, Scarletflood followed his lead, her slicked down tail raising to help keep herself balanced. “What-?” Her golden eyes widened, fixed firmly on the wave of mud that was rolling down, threatening to engulf them if they stayed there. Still, even as her brother turned and rocketed off, Scarletflood found her limbs wouldn’t move for her. She wasn’t a cat who scared easily. She could take anyone on for a fight, no problem, but this was something different altogether, and it frightened her. This wasn’t something she could take head on.

Her eyes glittered with fear as the mud slide approached, and although her brain shrieked at her to move, her muscles wouldn’t budge. Then, like a switch was flipped, the russet cat turned and fled like a bullet, towards secure rock. It wasn’t even until she was standing next to her brother that she felt a pain like fire shoot up her forepaw, and she let out a gasp, ears flattening as she adjusted her weight. Her eyes narrowed, and she took a few rough steps farther onto the rock, cursing her own stupidity.

    Snowyowl ~ SkyClan Warrior

She blinked when the tall Dark red and black spotted bengal walked by her, positioning himself smartly against the ridge so in case she slipped it would be him falling over the edge and not her. “Yeah I’ll keep that in mind.” SnowyOwl grumbled to Snappingfox as he told her to watch her footing and make sure she didn’t fall over the edge, simply rolling her bright yellow gaze before she moved a little bit from the edge of the ridge. Small paws digging into the mud while her toes were trying to keep a good grip on the ground below her.

Chin tilting she glanced towards Honeysplash, even though he was drenched to the bone and splattered with mud… he really was handsome. Although his facial expression seemed a bit down, his eyebrows drawn as he seemed deep in thought and sped up, leaving her behind as she struggled with her footing in the mud and the smooth faced rocks. Carefully she slowly stepped along the stones, her claws slightly peeking out to dig at the smooth surface of the stones to keep her balance. Suddenly her ears stood on end when she heard a sudden roar over the rain, everyone becoming alert as they seemed to hear the same thing. Eyes landing on HornetStar as he yelled out to them, her chin turning as her eyes landed on the mud slide that was heading straight towards them. Ears laying flat against her head as her eyes widen considerably in shock and fear as her stomach flipped with unease.

Oh StarClan, no… She gasped, her paws slipping and sliding in the mud as she tried to move out of the way, however in her fright she wasn’t exactly thinking straight, it was getting harder to move with the ground moving under her paws, trying to keep her balance as well as move out of the way. Hearing her name, her chin snapped towards Honeysplash, eyes wide as she opened her mouth. “I’m trying!” SnowyOwl gasped, pupils narrowing before he forcefully pushed her shoulder, paws skidding in the mud before she finally regained her footing. Ears laid flat against her head and her tail fluffed from her shock and desperation to get out of the way. Grunting slightly for a moment, she finally reached a Stoney overhang, her side hitting the stones before she looked over her shoulder to see Honeysplash following her, waiting as he reached her before she shifted to make more room for him. “Thank you…” She breathed, gasping for air as she watched the mud fall past them.
