    Hollowflame ~ ShadowClan Warrior

Everything ached, even from his ears all the way to his toes, even just shifting had the massive tomcat wincing slightly as he slowly lifted his big head. His head felt heavy, but he blinked through the haze, putting the blame on pushing himself too hard yesterday when training with the apprentices. He was getting older after all, although he wouldn’t say he was a senior warrior just yet. A soft hum was heard towards his stomach, emerald green eyes fluttering towards the beautiful chocolate calico that was curled up against him, lips lifting in a tender smile as he gazed down at his sleepy mate. Oh, how he missed sleeping beside of her. Lowering his chin, he licked at her forehead to give tender kisses before he lifted his chin and gazed out at the den. The sun wasn’t up but he could hear those outside of the den getting ready for the morning patrol, which he was supposed to attend. Looking back down at Briarfeather he smiled softly as he began to shift, her lips curling with annoyance as she was loosing her body pillow. “I’m sorry, darling. I’ll see you later.” He promised as he licked her cheek, before his heavy paws finally pulled him out of the den. The weather was no where near where a feline would be shivering, but he could feel that his achy joints were the cause of his shivers.

Roughly he shook his pelt, the dark red and deep black spotted pelt was ruffled as he walked towards the small morning patrol. A familiar sight reached his gaze as he spotted his literal younger twin, Snappingfox appeared to be in a better mood, perhaps it had to do with a certain little tortoiseshell. Chuckling faintly, he lowered his big head in order to affectionately bump his head against his sons shoulder blade. “Good morning.” He purred faintly, some fathers were afraid to show affection, he was not most fathers. He cared about every child he fathered and more, his mission to gave a rooted foundation with his kits. Pinecloud was speaking with another tomcat, allowing Hollowflame to lower his rump onto the ground as another shiver surpassed his spine. Ears flat against his head as he fought to keep his head up, a sudden dizzy spell over taking him for a brief moment. Pinecloud hesitated as she looked at the big tomcat, eyebrows pulling together in a worried fashion. “You okay, Hollowflame?” He was younger than her by a few seasons, but he was looking a bit worse for wear this morning. Grunting, he forced his chin up as his green eyes landed upon Pinecloud. “Yes, just sleepy is all. Are we ready to go?” He questioned as he pushed himself up into a standing position, his face feeling flushed as he gazed at the she-cat. She frowned before she gave a nod, “Yes, we are going to be checking on the WindClan border.” She informed, while Hollowflame nodded before he looked at Snappingfox. “That’s a long damn walk.” He muttered sourly, which was out of character for him, but he was looking forward to laying down and clearing his mind. Maybe it was something he ate? Shaking his head, he began to follow after Pinecloud, head and paws heavy.

Snappingfox wasn’t a morning cat. A true ShadowClan cat at heart, he much preferred to see the sun set than to see it rise. However, he had just finished having a meal with his friend, Cocoaflower. The two had grown close over the last few moons, and it was nice to have someone to talk to about certain things besides his parents or sister. It was nice to have a friend. He had never allowed himself to have any before he met Ash… His heart tightened at the thought of his beloved. He was getting better. He didn’t cry as much anymore. But each time the she-cat crossed his mind, the wound reopened a little more. It had almost been six moons, and their beautiful kits were set to become apprentices any day now. How he wished they had gotten to know their mother. He wished his family had gotten to know her. ‘She and Cloudedmoon would have been the best of friends…’ He thought to himself, a sad smile crossing his muzzle. He wondered if Ash and Blazemoon had become friends. He hoped they did, he hated the the thought of his beautiful mate roaming StarClan’s territory alone.

The red tomcat was shaken from his thoughts as something bumped him, fiery orange eyes lighting up has he snapped back to reality. “Glad you could finally join us, dad,” He teased, grinning at the older tom. However, his smile quickly faltered. Something was off. Hollowflame’s scent was different and he was acting weird. “Uh, maybe you should go back to bed. You look terrible.” While very blunt, Snappingfox was obviously concerned for his father. “Why don’t you go lay down, and I’ll go fetch Saplingskies or Hareflight,” He offered, whiskers twitching as he stood, looking to Pinecloud for back up. Surely she could see that something was wrong too, right? “Pinecloud and I can get someone to take your place. Maybe Tawnyshade or Fearedjackal are around…” He trailed off, tail twitching nervously.

He knew that something wasn’t exactly right, he couldn’t remember the last time he had been sick. His joints felt weak and another shiver tried to rush down his spine but he surpassed the feeling. Snappingfox was trying to get him to stay within camp, causing the big tomcat to shake his head, he wouldn’t have someone woken up at this hour just because he felt odd. “I’ll have none of that, I’m fine.” He reassured his kit, although his son seemed unsure as he looked towards Pinecloud. Pinecloud was watching the exchange as she smiled softly, so she didn’t hurt the older toms pride. “There’s no shame in taking a bit of a rest, we can find someone else for the patrol and then check back up on you.” She offered, causing Hollowflame to hesitate for a moment before his nostrils flared slightly and he gave a shake of his head. “You two worry too much, I’m just tired. Once we get moving I’ll wake up.” He promised, although Pinecloud hesitated she gave Snappingfox an apologetic look before the patrol began to walk out of camp.

Hollowflame looked towards Snappingfox, noticing that his son didn’t seem reassured and he gave the young male a soft smile. “Don’t you worry about me, I’m just tired.” He promised, although he heaviness in his paws made him think otherwise. But he wouldn’t allow himself to be weak in front of his kit, he was always strong and he felt like he couldn’t afford to be seen as anything else. He slowed his pace slightly as a shiver rushed down his spine, nose twitching slightly before he quickened his pace in order to keep up with Snappingfox. “How was Cocoaflower this morning? I noticed she wasn’t in camp.” He meowed, his voice thick and heavy rolling off of his tongue, but he ignored it. Instead he looked at his Snappingfox, he liked the young she-cat that his son had taken on as a friend and she often visited the nursery to see his horde of grandkids. His breathing was a little labored but nothing serious, expect for the overwhelming chill that was settling over his pelt, perhaps he should have stayed at camp.

If the roles were reversed, Snappingfox knew that his father would be fussing over him like a queen with their newborn kits. As the older tom waved Snappingfox and their clanmate off, the red bengal rolled his eyes “Stubborn old tom,” he huffed, almost sounding like his mother. If Briarfeather was around, she’d already have dragged Hollowflame off to the medicine den, but it seemed that she was still asleep. Nothing more he could do, he supposed. “Very well,” he mewed simply, taking a moment to briefly roll out his stiff neck and shoulders before following the two older warriors.

The trio had been walking quietly for a bit when his father’s voice reached Snappingfox’s ears once more. “Hm? Oh, she was fine. We shared a crow, then she left for a hunting patrol with Smokebelly and Leopardleg.” Snappingfox couldn’t help the look of distain that crossed his face as he mentioned Cloudedmoon’s sorry excuse for a ‘mate’. His claws instinctively flexed at the mere thought of the pathetic tom. It had been moons now, but he still remembered how devastated his sister had been after the tom who she thought loved her rejected her and their kits. What he wouldn’t give to rake his claws across the stupid warrior’s ugly muzzle.

‘He’d better stay away from Cocoaflower…’ he thought angrily, tail fluffing up at the thought.  The very idea of the grey maine coon being anywhere near the tortoiseshell she-cat was enough to send a jolt of white hot rage down Snappingfox’s spine. Then, the young warrior stopped briefly, blinking the thoughts away as he quickly calmed down. ‘Wow, where did that come from?’ He asked himself, shaking his head and forcing his fur to lie flat as a confused look crossed his features. Sure, he hated Smokebelly with every fiber of his being for what he did to Cloudedmoon, but that surge of anger felt different… weird, even. Strange. Quickly deciding not to dwell on it for too long, he shook his head and began walking once again, keeping an eye out for anything suspicious as they headed towards the WindClan border.

Perhaps if he hadn’t been feeling like death, then he would have noticed the rather curious faces that his son was pulling, clearly he was thinking about something that was irritating him to no end. His voice dripping with venom at the thought of Smokebelly being any where near Cocoaflower, this prompted a small chuckle to escape Hollowflames lips. “I’m sure Cocoaflower can manage. She’s a tough little lady.” He assures his son, bumping his shoulder blade against the younger toms shoulder. Pupils narrowed slightly as he noticed that Pinecloud kept glancing over her shoulder, her yellow eyes glancing him over every now and then. Did he really look that bad? Snappingfox was keeping pace with him, slowing when he slowed and picking up speed when he did. He grunted slightly, whether his child would admit it or not, he was keeping an eye on his old man.

They walked for what seemed like hours to Hollowflame, his knees were shaking slightly as they walked along the border, his scent changing even further as the strange illness was settling into his system. Pinecloud had been watching Hollowflame, he was a stubborn Tom and even though he had managed the patrol without complaint, his eyes were very dull, his ears relaxed and his body was beginning to shake. “We should head back.” Pinecloud decided, not bothering to give a reason why, her yellow eyes flashing towards Snappingfox as she silently got the younger toms attention. Hollowflame didn’t argue with the decision, his paws felt so heavy that he wasn’t sure if he could actually make the walk, his body quivered with an incurable chill. On the way back, the sun was beginning to rise, the heat of the day beginning to set in, causing Hollowflame to pant slightly. What was going on with him? Unease settled across Hollowflames face, his chest tightening slightly as his head began to swim. “S-Snapping…” Hollowflame stuttered, his body swaying slightly before his green eyes rolled back and his muscular frame fell to the ground. Pinecloud managed to look back at the two toms before Hollowflame fainted, her tail curling with fear. “Hollowflame!” She gasped, she knew he hadn’t been feeling well but for him to faint, she had never seen him in such a condition.

Snappingfox snorted as Hollowflame commented on Cocoaflower being tough. ‘Toms like Smokebelly don’t take no for an answer,’ He thought bitterly, tail lashing. He stepped away from Hollowflame to rub against a tree, making sure the scent of ShadowClan stayed strong in the area. He’d only looked away for a moment, and when he looked back, Hollowflame started falling. “Dad!” He yelped, diving to catch his father before he hit the ground. He managed to cushion the landing a bit, but didn’t have time to stop the fall completely. The young tom’s fur was standing on end, and his eyes were wide with shock and fear. “Dad, wake up!” He hissed, roughly prodding the older tom in an attempt to get him to react. “Dad!”  He roughly shoved his muzzle into Hollowflame’s neck, trying his hardest to provoke a reaction. Nothing worked.

“Pinecloud! What’s wrong with him?!” He snarled, hoping the older warrior knew what was going on. Hollowflame hadn’t just dropped dead. No, there was still movement in his flank, but it was faint. He shook his head, quickly glancing between the she-cat and his passed out father. He didn’t even wait for Pinecloud to answer. “Run back to camp, tell Saplingskies that we’re coming! Now!” Snappingfox wasn’t one to order older warriors around, but this was not the time to be polite and ask nicely. Hollowflame could be dying! He crouched, grabbed his father by the scruff, and heaved him up onto his back, panting slightly from the exertion. Hollowflame was dead weight. Limp. Almost lifeless. Snappingfox grunted as he rose to his full height, his father dangling from where he had been placed. He headed back to camp as fast as he could manage. Hollowflame was weighing him down, and he didn’t want to move too quick, for fear of the older tom slipping off his back.

He just hoped he would make it back in time.

Pinecloud had no idea what had happened, her yellow eyes wide as she looked down at the father and son duo. Snappingfox was doing his best to try and waken his father but nothing was working, her heart fell to her stomach, Hollowflame wasn’t moving and he wasn’t making a sound, although Snappingfox was close enough to see that his father was indeed breathing. “I …. I don’t know. I’ve never seen him…. he’s never…” Pinecloud rambled, but she blinked as Snappingfox spoke roughly to her, bringing her out of her haze. Nodding, she turned around and began to race back towards camp, her nimble paws thumping against the moist ground and the breath felt like it was knocked out of her. Pushing her way through the entrance of camp, cats stopped what they were doing and stared at her in bewilderment as she pushed her way through and burst into the medicine cat den. “Sap…ling… skies.” Pinecloud huffed, clearly out of breath as the slender brown tabby was taking a moment to take a few deeps breathes, ears flat against her head. “It’s Hollowflame. He’s collapsed.” Pinecloud finally managed, lifting her chin for her eyes to find the short Tom. “We were on a patrol, I knew he wasn’t feeling well but… but on the way back he suddenly collapsed! Snappingfox is bringing him here as we speak.” Pinecloud wasn’t sure how the medicine cat would react, he was still recovering from his own mysterious illness and the patient was his own father.

Hollowflame wasn’t sure of anything that was going on, his head was foggy and even though he wanted to wake up. He couldn’t. His breathing was ragged, lips parting in order for him to breathe better while snot was beginning to run from his dark pink nose. His pelt was on fire, but he was also shivering from the fever that overtook his system. Usually illness’s didn’t attack someone system in such a violent way, but Hollowflame was struggling to breath and stay coherent. Snappingfox was dragging his heavy and limp body back to camp, he was so far out of it that he couldn’t even feel his body touching the ground and leaning heavily into that of his eldest son. Snappingfox was sent from StarClan, caring for him the way he was.  Another harsh shiver rushed down Hollowflames spine, a groan of pain slipping from his lips as his lungs rattled, chin falling limp against his shoulders shoulder. If cats could sweat, he knew he would be drenched.
